Design, Evaluation, and Selection of Novel Pt(IV) Complexes as Anticancer Agents. Platinum anticancer drugs are arguably the most widely used anticancer agents in the world but serious problems remain with toxicity and resistance. Platinum(IV) compounds have numerous advantages in terms of stability and thereby, lower toxicity. The demand for safety and security products is growing as the importance of providing an environment safer from natural, accidental or man-made threats increases in the community. Life safety applications in buildings and work environments as well as trains and planes for example are dependent upon the ability for non-powered passive systems to give efficient visual guidance in dangerous dark and smoke fill ....New Nanoscale Up-converting Photoluminescent Materials for Passive Safety Visual Systems. Chemical Synthesis of Bioactive Metabolites and Analogues from Marine Sources and Myxobacteria. This project could result in the production of a new type of anticancer compound. The proposal will study the synthesis of novel natural product analogues that could possess superior biological activities to the natural compounds. In addition, new chemistry may be developed which could be utilised to synthesise a number of related molecules.

The ultra-high resolution imaging NMR spectrometer at the centre of this application is a generation ahead of comparable facilities in Australia and will extend the research capacity of numerous research groups comprising in excess of 50 academics and postgraduate students. We have identified peptides (from glands of frogs and toads), some of which are amongst the most powerful biologically active compounds in the animal kingdom. The aims of this project are to investigate the relationship between the structure and bioactivity of chosen groups of peptides including pheromones, anticancer and antibiotic peptides, and peptides which inhibit neuronal nitric oxide ....Biologically active peptides and proteins from anurans: the relationship between structure and activity.
