This project aims to improve cancer imaging by combining two complimentary, novel techniques. Its success will create an internationally leading position for Australia in cutting-edge research in optical and terahertz biomedical imaging. This innovative, fundamental research will expand Australia's research capacity in imaging sciences. The nation will benefit from new medical diagnostic techniques that will improve the detection and treatment of cancer; as well as aid the clinical assessment of burns. This multidisciplinary, internationally collaborative research has additional wide ranging benefits in biology, medicine, pharmaceutical science and national security.Read moreRead less

Laboratory classes are a critical part of science and engineering degree programs, but there has been little research into what actually takes place within them. Remote laboratories, in which students control equipment via the internet, are one potential solution for accommodating rising numbers of students, but the interfaces must be developed to effectively support student learning. This project will investigate how students interact with equipment, each other, and with laboratory demonstrators in order to determine the crucial components of effective laboratory learning experiences. It will identify and characterise the interactions of students in laboratory classes, and develop mechanisms to support these interactions remotely.Read moreRead less
Complexities of the mitochondrial transcriptome. This project aims to understand mitochondrial gene expression and energy production. Energy production is important for living things to grow and develop. In mammals, the mitochondria, the energy producing “powerhouses of the cell”, contain their own genetic assembly instructions. This project aims to understand these genetic instructions, revealing how genes control energy production. This project will characterise the genetic instructions, the mitochondrial transcriptome and the proteins that control them. These advances are expected to provide a mechanistic understanding of how gene expression responds to changes in cellular energy demands. This knowledge will generate new biotechnological tools for Australian science and will have important long-term implications for improving agriculture and medicineRead moreRead less
Statistical methodology for events on a network, with application to road safety. This project develops new methods to analyse road traffic accident rates, aiming to identify accident black spots and to develop an evidence base for future road design and road safety management. These methods can be applied to other types of events on a network of roads, railways, rivers, electrical wires, communication networks or airline routes.
Unique epigenetic states in plant stem cell niches for safeguarding genome integrity. Plant stem cells are the foundation cells of all plant growth and development, including generation of the reproductive cells. Therefore, it is critical that stem cells defend against attacks that may damage the genome. A unique epigenetic state in plant stem cell niches has been discovered that may protect the genome from damage due to parasitic DNA elements. Using sophisticated genomics, genetics, and cellula ....Unique epigenetic states in plant stem cell niches for safeguarding genome integrity. Using sophisticated genomics, genetics, and cellular technologies, this project will investigate how stem cell epigenetic state is linked to genome defence, how environmental stresses can disrupt the defence system, and the role of the system in driving new genetic diversity. This knowledge is of high importance as agricultural crops enter an era of increasingly challenging conditions.Read moreRead less
Efficient structure search over large graphs. The project aims to develop advanced search technology to support large-scale graph applications. The success of the project not only brings a breakthrough in technology development but also provides training for high quality personnel in this important and growing area, and brings considerable economic and social benefits to Australia.
State-trace analysis: theory and application. A fundamental question for the science of psychology is: how can we identify the functional components of the human mind from observed behaviour and bodily states? This project explores this question through a new methodology called state-trace analysis and apply it to a basic cognitive ability - the capacity to learn to classify different objects.
A three dimensional video-based vision system for future robots. With the recent introduction of new three dimensional (3D) video sensors, opportunities for the development of advanced 3D vision systems for robots working in dynamic environments are now becoming possible. A real-time visual robotic system will be developed to substantially reduce the expensive costs associated with elder's health and home care expenses.
