The project aims to design, implement, and integrate solutions to manage resources in cloud data centres (CDCs), especially when operating under bursty workload conditions. CDCs are expected to assure performance whilst optimising resource usage at a minimum cost, but efficiently providing resources with specific performance requirements can be difficult. This project intends to develop scalable solutions with industry approved software plug-ins. This is expected to affect both trustworthy information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure (delivering more resilient CDCs) and economic sustainability (reducing CDC usage cost for both users and providers) of today’s computerised society.Read moreRead less

This project aims to design, implement, and integrate solutions to improve resource use of private cloud data centres (CDCs). CDCs are expected to guarantee performance while optimising resource usage at a minimum cost. This incurs technical challenges that must be tackled to efficiently provision on-demand resources with specific performance requirements. The project intends to push the applicability of both current techniques and the ones to be designed in this project to industry-scale CDCs, and identify metrics and variables to holistically control service-level agreements of hosted applications. Scalable solutions with industry approved software plug-ins are the major outcomes of this project. The outcomes of this project will have a substantial impact on both environmental (lowering energy consumption to lead to greener infrastructure) and economic sustainability (reducing cloud usage cost for both users and providers) of today’s much computerised society.Read moreRead less

Test bed for wide-area software defined networking research: This project aims to develop a wide-area test bed, spanning ten organisations, for conducting research and experimentation in the emerging disruptive technology of Software Defined Networking (SDN). SDN is likely to bring long-term transformation to the networking industry, much like cloud computing did, by enabling dynamic virtualised elastic network services under software control. The test bed will empower Australian researchers in network technologies and dependent applications (for example, multimedia and security) to collaboratively develop and demonstrate novel ideas at scale. This is expected to benefit Australia by giving our researchers international recognition in this nascent area, and developing a national talent pool for local industry.Read moreRead less
Energy-Efficient Computing: Expanding the Role of Scheduling in Cloud Data Centres. Cloud data centres have become increasingly large-scale to meet ever increasing computing and storage capacity. Cloud data centres have become increasingly large-scale to meet ever increasing computing and storage capacity. The requirement of uninterrupted service availability has also contributed to such expansion. However, this relentless pursuit of high performance and high availability has led to serious resource over-provisioning and, in turn, low performance to energy consumption ratios. The impact of this poor resource management goes beyond the issue of cloud data centre efficiency, including excessive carbon footprint. This project aims to develop new energy-aware scheduling and resource allocation algorithms to provide energy-efficient solutions. These solutions exploit both workload and system diversity in cloud data centres.Read moreRead less
Decimetre-level indoor positioning on Wi-Fi. This project aims to exploit both spatial and frequency diversities based on the multiple-input, multiple-out and frequency hopping techniques to achieve the goal of decimetre-level position accuracy by significantly increasing Wi-Fi bandwidth. Wi-Fi positioning is utilised in locations where GPS is blocked, typically this is within a structure. Wi-Fi positioning is utilised in locations where GPS is blocked, typically this is within a structure. The project will design a set of mechanisms to facilitate Wi-Fi positioning, discover key principles to guide practical design, and develop advanced algorithms to push the performance limit to decimetre-level accuracy. The project will develop key fundamental technologies which are expected to promote innovative, practical, and cost-effective applications to local industry and service sectors and contribute to Australia's long-term economic growth.Read moreRead less

Learning in higher education has become more complex since much of the founding research 40 years ago, with online technologies increasingly used to engage a diverse university student population in student-centred learning. The proposed study aims to update our understanding of student learning to this contemporary university context. The project will focus specifically on how students interpret online tasks set by their teachers, how they complete those tasks by tracking their activities in real-time, and what outcomes they achieve. This study will advance fundamental understanding of these inter-related processes, and provide the stimulus to change thinking about educational design, teaching practices, and support for students.Read moreRead less
Understanding the deep driving forces of Earth’s large-scale topography through time. We propose to model the convection of Earth’s mantle linked to tectonic plate motions to unravel their combined influence on the evolution of topography over 550 million years. The project will lead to an understanding of the driving forces of large-scale topography in continental interiors and along their margins through geological time.

The project aims to develop novel computational epidemiological models to contribute to guidelines for optimal prophylaxis, vaccination and case management. Emerging threats posed by infectious diseases and bioterrorism could have dramatic effects on the Australian population, productivity and economy. The project aims to improve the accuracy and scope of modern computational epidemiological models by integrating large-scale Census datasets and explicitly simulating the entire population down to the level of single individuals, coupled with complex network-based and information flow analysis. The intended outcomes include a more precise and efficient forecasting of critical epidemic dynamics, and increased effectiveness of prevention, mitigation and management of socio-economic, socio-ecological and national security crises.Read moreRead less

The focus of this project is to develop modelling techniques for energy consumption in next-generation telecommunication networks. A growing problem for telecommunication providers is how to minimise the energy consumption of their networks. This is important in reducing their operational expenditure and meeting the energy demands of future growth in network traffic. There is an emerging trend towards next-generation networks (such as 5G wireless and network function virtualisation), which will use highly dynamic network architectures. Project outcomes are intended to enable real-time management of energy usage, and the assessment of the financial benefits of different investment strategies in network infrastructure.Read moreRead less
