An integrative and distributed data management and workflow framework for e-research in biomedical imaging. This project will develop new tools for neuroimaging research: (i) efficient distributed infrastructure and workflow capabilities and (ii) semantic tools using existing ontological frameworks and specific neuroimaging ontologies.
These new capabilities will significantly enhance the productivity of neuroimaging research.
Fostering digital participation through living labs in regional and rural Australian communities. This project aims to identify the specific digital needs and practices of residents in regional and rural Australia in the context of the implementation of high speed internet, including the National Broadband Network. It will identify new ways for enabling residents to develop their digital confidence and skills at home and in the community.
Practical cyber security for next generation power transmission networks. Emerging technologies and increasing standardisation create new security risks for critical national infrastructure such as power transmission networks. This project will develop a new test facility for experimentation with substation configurations and use it to devise new principles for securing the next generation of electricity infrastructure.
Girls and Information Communication Technology (ICT) Career Pathways: Tackling the Upper Middle School 'Turn Off'. This project proposes collaborative research to address low rates of female participation in Information Communication Technology professional occupations and education pathways - involving academic researchers and personnel from Education Queensland and Queensland based ICT companies . A comprehensive Queensland data set will be generated by surveying and interviewing female Year 11-12 students and ICT professionals, and analysed with industry partner involvement. Results will provide the basis for developing new and coordinated strategic approaches among education systems, ICT industry, and universities to improving school programs and enhancing female participation rates. This is necessary for addressing projected skill shortfalls and maximising talent pools available to industry.

Improvements in information technology (IT) services will benefit the Australian business community as organisations today are almost totally dependent on IT to survive. The implementation of IT service management standards reduces IT downtime as well as improving IT service quality and customer satisfaction. Private and public sector organisations will benefit as the developed tool will enable self-assessment of capability in line with international standards. In addition, the project will validate and transition emerging standards into industry, placing Australia at the forefront of adoption and use. Results will be fed back to the international standards community further enhancing Australia's reputation as a leader in IT standards development.Read moreRead less

The aim of this study is to develop and evaluate innovative interaction and visualisation approaches that allow the insurance sector to include social media and crowdsourced data in risk identification and assessment. This data, combined with traditional risk assessment information, offers time-critical insights into emerging hazards and threats. The study aims to deliver methods and tools to crowdsource data from contributors through sensing and active sharing, as well as novel interaction and visualisation approaches to aid in the analysis of the resulting data. The project intends to benefit both the insurers and the insured by making non-traditional data sources available for risk assessment and prevention.Read moreRead less

During airport security screening and processing, confusion and error are greatest when systems or contexts are unfamiliar. Poorly designed systems compromise the interactions of airport security personnel and decrease their ability to promptly and accurately respond to situations. This project aims to deliver a suite of automated methods to monitor security operator knowledge and engagement, to assess the real-time security screening context, and to detect unusual passenger behaviour at the screening check-point. This monitoring aims to provide new knowledge and techniques to enhance security operator performance, refine the screening process, improve passenger experience and, most critically, ensure safety at Australian airports.Read moreRead less
