The requested 3D scanning laser vibrometer is intended for the characterisation of 3D vibration of small and large, simple and complex structures, for the purpose of understanding the vibratory behaviour as a precursor to optimising noise and vibration control strategies. It has application to small items for which the use of contact sensors is impossible or impractical, as well as large structures for which the vibration fields can be complex and a 3D scanning capability is essential. Examples include micro-positioning actuators, piezo-electric motors, live cell response, disk brakes, aircraft and vehicles. Outcomes include the enhancement of existing research projects, allowing a greater understanding of the noise and vibration phenomena.Read moreRead less

A novel approach to controlling boundary-layer separation. This project will involve fundamental research into the control of the fluid dynamical phenomena of boundary-layer separation and transition to turbulence. The project will be built upon a firm foundation of mathematical modelling of the complex behaviour of fluid flows that are near the onset of flow separation or turbulence. The project will produce results that will permit the development of control strategies that can be implemented ....A novel approach to controlling boundary-layer separation. The project will be built upon a firm foundation of mathematical modelling of the complex behaviour of fluid flows that are near the onset of flow separation or turbulence. The project will produce results that will permit the development of control strategies that can be implemented in a wide variety of important technological applications, such as drag reduction in the aerospace and ship industries as well as the control of stall (or loss of lift) in modern aircraft.Read moreRead less

Australia's economy is becoming increasingly dependent on many complex distributed systems. Some important examples are the Internet, electronic commerce, financial networks, transportation systems, health care networks, telecommunication networks, defence systems, intelligent manufacturing systems and organisational workflow management systems. Failure in these systems can result in serious financial loss (in banking applications) and loss of life or serious accidents in safety critical areas (medical, transport and defence applications). It is thus of utmost importance that distributed systems are designed correctly. This project aims to advance the state of the art in verifying that distributed systems will work correctly.Read moreRead less
Extending the scope of modular analysis for the validation of large systems. The increasing complexity of computer systems has severe implications for verification and validation, especially for critical systems (e.g. medical supervision, avionics mission systems). The standard approach is to build a formal model of the system and automatically analyse its behaviour. Such models can be captured in a modular, high-level description, but the number of states is usually so large as to preclude analysis. The modular analysis proposed in this project matches the analysis technique to the structure of the model. Preliminary results are promising and motivate the extension of the technique to a larger class of modular descriptions.Read moreRead less
RNS Hardware for Public-Key Cryptography and E-security. In a world where electronic communication is ever-present, the security of electronic information, e-security, is an issue of the utmost concern for government, business and individuals alike. Public-key cryptography is a powerful tool in the e-security toolkit. Using this technology it is possible to confirm the identity of individuals, maintain the privacy of personal data and guarantee the authenticity of transactions.
The aim of this project is to design new public-key cryptography hardware to provide faster, more secure communications for computers, networks and smart cards. Achieving this will require innovations in the way computers perform arithmetic and how this arithmetic is realised as an integrated circuit.Read moreRead less
