Summary
Prevention and treatment of addiction to stimulants such as methamphetamine is imperative for community health and safety. This fellowship will enable me to apply my expertise in impulsivity and addiction to identify people at risk of increasing methamphetamine use and to develop and evaluate cognitive training therapies that will empower people with methamphetamine related problems to control their drug use. Outcomes include a risk identification and triage tool and three novel therapies.
I am a psychologist who leads an internationally recognised program of research which aims to increase our understanding of alcohol and drug problems, prevent them where possible and improve treatment responses.

Summary
Pharmaceutical opioid dependence is a growing problem. There are effective treatments available, yet few people who need treatment receive it. Currently, pharmacists receive little training on substance use disorders, yet are in contact with almost every person likely to develop problems with pharmaceutical opioids. This project will take an innovative approach to involve pharmacists in identifying those developing problems with pharmaceutical opioids and referring them to treatment.
Alcohol,tobacco, Illicit And Prescribed Drugs: Prospective Cohorts And RCTs

Summary
This research addresses the important areas of infant, childhood, adolescent, adult, and family well-being and the effects of exposure to tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drug use. The impacts of these substances on psychological, cognitive, vocational, and physical well-being remain poorly researched. A related set of research projects is aimed to build the evidence base for effective intervention to prevent or manage psychological and cognitive sequelae from such exposure.
The brain plays a major role in the overconsumption of high fat/high sugar foods and this contributes to obesity but it receives little attention when it comes to developing novel treatments. My lab showed that a FDA-approved smoking cessation medication, that is a nicotinic receptor modulator, decreased the overconsumption of sugar. This project aims are to identify which nicotinic receptors and brain circuits are involved in the overconsumption of sucrose to improve treatments for obesity.

My vision is to build the world’s leading dedicated translational research program for the prevention and treatment of comorbid mental health and substance abuse. While it is widely recognised that there is significant comorbidity in these two areas they have traditionally been approached in isolation, making it virtually impossible to make significant inroads. I seek to increase our understanding, prevent these where possible and improve treatment responses.
Drug addiction is a major health and medical problem in Australia. It is a chronically relapsing condition for which there are few effective treatments. This project identifies novel circuits within the brain which are responsible for inhibiting drug taking. It will provide new knowledge on how we may able to prevent relapse to drug taking and so promote and maintain long -term abstinence.
What Can We Learn About Cannabis Vaping Through The Internet?

More research is required to address the growing popularity of vaping as a novel method of delivering cannabis in order to minimise harm to mental health, especially in adolescents. This project will examine: 1) the latest trends in cannabis vaping, 2) cannabis vaping communications using data from online cryptomarkets, videos, and social media platforms. The knowledge generated can inform debate and future policies around cannabis use, which is timely and highly controversial in Australia.
