Summary
We aim to convert novel scientific findings to better treating patients with end-stage heart disease. A secondary aim is to train clinicians with a better understanding of sophisticated scientific approaches so they can better transfer this knowledge to health practices and policies. We will study new ways of identifying patients who are likely to suffer from heart attacks as well as those with heart problems who appear to function well but in fact have poor health and life outlook.
Over 10,000 persons per year in Australia are diagnosed with a blood cancer, accounting for 11% of cancer deaths. Stem cell transplantation remains curative therapy for these diseases but is limited by cancer relapse and an immune-mediated process known as graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) which account for death of up to 50% of patients. This CRE will integrate centres from Australia and the USA to coordinate new treatments in transplant and cell therapy to improve blood cancer outcomes.

Summary
Severe infection kills millions of people every year, but clinicians and policy makers rarely get the information they need in time to make potentially life-saving decisions about infection. We will apply modern genomics and information systems to better understand infection threats in critical care environments and explore the ethical and medicolegal aspects that may either facilitate or present barriers to important research and time-critical decision making.
