2026 ARDC Annual Survey is now open!

The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) invites you to participate in a short survey about your interaction with the ARDC and use of our national research infrastructure and services. The survey will take approximately 5 minutes and is anonymous. It’s open to anyone who uses our digital research infrastructure services including Reasearch Link Australia.

We will use the information you provide to improve the national research infrastructure and services we deliver and to report on user satisfaction to the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) program.

Please take a few minutes to provide your input. The survey closes COB Friday 29 May 2026.

Political history of the New South Wales Aboriginal Land Rights Act, 1983. The story of the Aboriginal Land Rights Act (ALRA) that established the land councils, made provisions for land recovery and enterprises, and reshaped Aboriginal people's relationship with the state has not been told. The ALRA initiated a new policy era of self-determination through the three-tier Aboriginal Land Council Network mechanism for land recovery and 15 year compensation fund to support the network and develop enterprises. Aboriginal Land Councils have become significant land holders - 81367 hectares valued at over $2billion and investment. The story of the ALRA is one of tenacious engagement with the state and one of tradition and change that has not been documented.

This project aims to investigate how Indigenous children can grow up educationally strong. Using data from the Longitudinal Study of Indigenous Children, the project plans to develop a statistically robust picture of how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children do attain educational achievement despite adverse life circumstances. The project seeks to provide a picture of the educational experience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children across time, different locations (urban, regional, remote) and life circumstances. It plans to map how children achieve strong education regardless of disadvantage and uses Indigenous and Western concepts of educational attainment and resilience to frame its analyses. The project expects to inform policy interventions that will maximise children's educational life chances.

It examines approaches to managing lands for economic development and community benefit, especially the leveraging of communal land holdings for economic advancement as the return of land to the NSW Aboriginal community will escalate from 2017. Yet the benefits of land-based entrepreneurialism in NSW have never been reviewed. The project will provide significant benefits, including improved policy settings and insights into Aboriginal worlds.

Philanthropy and Indigenous people: Enhancing Indigenous education outcomes. Indigenous Australians suffer a disparity in educational outcomes that frays the social fabric of the nation. While there is abundant evidence that education is empowering and the social and economic benefits of improving educational outcomes are significant, past and current efforts to increase educational attainment and enhance outcomes among the nation's most disadvantaged citizens have not achieved the gains most expected. A promising new pathway exists in creative and innovative approaches to the support of Indigenous education by a small number of philanthropic bodies. This research will examine philanthropy in this area and will provide important practical insights of value to the nation.

The project will create a substantial evidence base, leading to a comprehensive model of language revitalisation and how it operates in each place, and for whom. The model will show how local and national organisations can invest in Aboriginal languages, and what kinds of returns they can expect. The project involves a two-way collaboration with Aboriginal people across the country that will elevate their voices and build their capacity for designing and evaluating programs, businesses and technologies for keeping Aboriginal languages strong.

The aim of this one year project is to reconstruct relations between the Gugu Badhun people and settler families from the time of first encounters with Europeans to the restructuring of the pastoral industry in the late 1960s. There is an urgency to this research in that it aims to record and analyse the experiences and knowledge of Elders and non-indigenous members of pastoral families who are elderly and in frail health. Preliminary interviews suggest that if this research is not undertaken very soon we risk being unable to understand events that give new and remarkable insights into unique and intimate relations relations that characterized life in the Kennedy District.

Reciprocal Accountability and Public Value in Aboriginal Organisations. This project aims to examine the different meanings of ‘public value’ and accountability in the work of Aboriginal organisations. Aboriginal organisations in the Kimberley region are funded by governments to deliver services that are of value to the public. They also reflect Aboriginal culture and identity, and represent Aboriginal interests. This also creates value for their own publics. This project investigates the tension between these two ways of understanding public value. It investigates accountability for public value creation, whether it reflects the real value of Aboriginal organisations, and whether it can be done better. The project plans to draw on anthropology and public administration theory.

Profit and Loss: The commercial trade in Indigenous human remains. This project will be the first to investigate the global commercial trade in Indigenous human remains. It will employ a multi-disciplinary approach involving history, economic anthropology, economic history, and data science. The project will generate new knowledge about the 19th century global marketplace in Australian Indigenous human remains, and will reveal whether and how these are involved in the trade’s modern manifestations from 1950 to the present. The project will uncover an unknown history, assist repatriation practice, provide information to help reduce the modern trade, and contribute to truth-telling as a precondition of healing and reconciliation.
