Summary
This Fellowship will identify the health outcomes, pathways to disability and death, and risk and protective factors for these harms among people with alcohol problems. Projects will include a longitudinal study of people with existing alcohol problems, a longitudinal study of adolescent emerging alcohol consumers, and a field study of alcohol problems in night-time entertainment areas. Findings will inform standardised alcohol screening and intervention and expansion of alcohol treatment.

Summary
To conduct the longest and most comprehensive prospective follow-up of Australian heroin users. A 11 year follow-up presents the unique opportunity to examine: Mortality rates, remission rates, criminal histories and levels of psychopathology ; Predictive factors of long term remission, mortality, criminality and the health service utilisation associated with heroin use careers.
Adolescence has historically been viewed as a healthy time and attracted little research investment or policy attention compared to other age groups. In recent years the health problems of adolescence including mental disorder, injury and substance misuse have leapt into prominent. This application deals with the causes, consequences, policy responses and prevention of the common health problems that occur in young people.
