This project is driven by the groundbreaking applications of a new cryptographic technology that allows analysis of encrypted (scrambled) data without needing to decrypt (unscramble) it first. The results of this project can be used to enable secure remote data storage, electronic auctions and voting, and protecting medical records.
Risk management and funding structures: an econometric panel data analysis of health insurance in Australia. This research analyses how subsidies to Australian health insurance, both public and private, vary by income, risk of loss, age and region. It will provide the necessary information to guide future health funding by analysing the equity and efficiency of existing subsidies and alternative subsidies related to individuals' risk of high health costs.
Next-generation techniques for analysing massive data sets. To process enormous amounts of data, leading computing companies are turning to modern computing frameworks, for which little theory of efficient computational techniques has been developed. This project will resolve key theoretical questions and provide fast techniques for poorly understood pattern recognition and bioinformatics problems.
Living on the Margin: The Relationship between Mental Health and Work in Australia. This project will assess the relationship between Australians' mental health and their work, for example, employment status, work conditions and hours. The study is the first to exploit the detailed timing of mental health and employment transitions to identify whether poor labour market outcomes lead to poor mental health or whether the reverse is true. Children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds who exceed their parents' social achievements are pioneers. The aims of this project are to introduce this exceptional upward mobility as an alternative measure of economic success and to study its distribution and determinants.
