Besides directly benefiting the Partner Organization, this project will enable more efficient access to large picture repositories in news agencies and publishers, digital libraries and film archives. It will make public use of visual information much more convenient and economical. It will help security officers to effortlessly and accurately find particular scenes from the images generated by a large closed-circuit TV networks. Also, the developed technology can be applied to tele-education and e-commerce. New algorithms developed in this project will benefit the Australian and world scientific communities.Read moreRead less

High resolution recording and analysis will exploit the full potential of motion capture with progress towards automatic recognition of gesture and, eventually, real-time systems. Automatic tracking and recognition systems are in high demand and the interlacing of data from multiple modes is now computationally achievable. SeeHear! will be coded using techniques in multimodal fusion - tracking of bodies will be enhanced by locating and recognizing facial features, and a learning algorithm used to classify gesture from patterns of force and physiological response. In the future, full interactivity will be achieved by interconnecting visual and auditory data with a flow on to applications in the performing arts, rehabilitation and security.Read moreRead less
Computer Vision Optimization Problems Using Machine Learning. Computer Vision concerns itself with understanding the world through the analysis of images obtained by a video or still camera. An important application is tracking of people in video and modelling their movements. This has evident applications in security, sport and entertainment. Computer Vision concerns itself with understanding the world through the analysis of images obtained by a video or still camera. An important application is tracking of people in video and modelling their movements. This has evident applications in security, sport and entertainment. By enabling the computer to capture the motion of a subject in a video, we may detect suspicious activity in security, analyze the motion (golf-swing, diving style) of a sports-person, or capture the motion of an actor for animation or game applications. Development of a reliable technology requires new optimization techniques, which will place Australia at the forefront of the application of such research, commercially and for the public benefit.Read moreRead less
Pattern Recognition and Scene Analysis via Machine Learning. We plan to use kernel methods, a novel machine learning technique, for computer vision problems, such as scene analysis and real time object recognition. Such capabilities are relevant for the design of intelligent and adaptive systems, suitable for complex real world environments. Expected outcomes are the design of efficient statistical tools which take the special nature of visual data into account (structure, decomposition, prior ....Pattern Recognition and Scene Analysis via Machine Learning. We plan to use kernel methods, a novel machine learning technique, for computer vision problems, such as scene analysis and real time object recognition. Such capabilities are relevant for the design of intelligent and adaptive systems, suitable for complex real world environments. Expected outcomes are the design of efficient statistical tools which take the special nature of visual data into account (structure, decomposition, prior knowledge of physical environments, etc.) and combine the advantages of feature based high-level vision methods with low-level machine learning techniques.

Communities need new approaches to complex natural resource management issues. To achieve environmentally sustainable practices society not only requires reliable information but also the motivation for its uptake. Configuring an effective model for cultural production and distribution will inspire innovative cultural practice and enhance community natural resource management. The Project draws upon, and contributes to, the national and multi-State mandates of both Project partners. The Project, and the partner Investment Plan it will inform, contributes to National Priority 1, An Environmentally Sustainable Australia, and Priority Goal 1, Water - a critical resource.Read moreRead less
The Internationalisation Of Charlie Chaplin's Tramp. This project is a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary study of the multifarious reincarnations of Charlie Chaplin's The Tramp across the world's film, theatre, television and advertising industries over the last nine decades. This project is a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary study of the multifarious reincarnations of Charlie Chaplin's The Tramp across the world's film, theatre, television and advertising industries over the last nine decades. The project examines the appeal of Chaplin's Tramp in different languages and cultures, and the ways in which the figure has been adapted, translated, reconfigured and indigenised for local audiences and their individual contexts and traditions. The Internationalisation Of Chaplin's Tramp draws on theoretical perspectives and methodologies from screen studies, history, the visual arts, anthropology and cultural studies and the writing and production practices of documentary film.Read moreRead less
A history of press photography in Australia. Press photography has long influenced how Australians have understood themselves and their world. In collaboration with the National Library of Australia and the Walkley Foundation, the project explores the evolving role of photographs in breaking news, and historical shifts in photographic technologies, media practices and ethics.
Juries and interactive visual evidence: impacts on deliberation processes and outcomes. Australia confronts new types of security threat in the form of terrorist networks, sophisticated money-laundering and people-smuggling operations. The AFP and prosecutors are developing new display technologies to explain complex information to jurors, in the process simplifying court processes and shortening trials. At the cutting edge of this development are interactive displays, including computer simulat ....Juries and interactive visual evidence: impacts on deliberation processes and outcomes. Australia confronts new types of security threat in the form of terrorist networks, sophisticated money-laundering and people-smuggling operations. The AFP and prosecutors are developing new display technologies to explain complex information to jurors, in the process simplifying court processes and shortening trials. At the cutting edge of this development are interactive displays, including computer simulations and 360o crime scene reconstructions. Judges will use empirical information about how juries use such information in order to develop appropriate guidelines for admitting interactive visual evidence, while court planners and architects will use the project data to identify implications for court procedures and design.

The project plans to discover, document, analyse and compile a lasting archive of utilitarian filmmaking in Australia. 'Utilitarian' describes client-sponsored, instructional and governmental filmmaking existing outside the conventional theatrical contexts by which cinema is usually defined. Focused on the post-World War Two decades before the proliferation of video in the late 1970s, the project aims to highlight previously-unstudied aspects of the media industries. This is designed to deliver new knowledge of the skills and subject matter that sustained filmmaking, communication and education in Australia during a time when conventional scholarship assumes there was almost no significant filmmaking.Read moreRead less
