This project seeks to develop a new style of representation for holographic subjects through the modulation effects of "scintillating" backgrounds. As the purpose of holographic displays moves away from the replication of extant objects towards the artistic generation of synthetic/creative content, holographic images call increasingly upon conventions of pictorial style as well as the tacit perceptions of beholders for their successful interpretation. In this study the reflected light of traditional mosaics is used to modulate projected light articulating the holographic subject. The augmented image activates cues such as occlusion and retinal disparity employed by beholders in the perception of holograms.Read moreRead less

Feminist theory meets indigenous art. Aboriginal reconciliation is high on the social and cultural agenda in Australian life. The place of art in this political moment has been critical - the culture of Australian indigenous people has come to international attention, and won recognition, largely through art works. This reflects in many cases a political strategy on the part of indigenous communities to use art to depict their traditional Dreamings, of which the world was ignorant. But underlying this, is the assumption made in Aboriginal philosophies that the art is the knowledge it portrays, which in turn evokes title to land through the law of Dreaming, of belonging to "country". Given the increasing tendency of the US film industry to co-opt international talent and production bases into its global operation (New Zealand being a prime example), Australian cinema faces mounting hurdles in its quest for national and international success. While education centres such as AFTRS have contributed to excellence in key aspects of local production, Australian film music has been afforded minimal attention. Consequently, music industry training and production often proceeds on the bases of vague assumptions and inefficient precedents. In-depth research is vital to inform national training, production and policy making so as to allow Australian cinema to embrace innovation and engage creatively with the international market.Read moreRead less
