Safety management system for heavy vehicle transport. Crashes involving heavy vehicles result in around 330 deaths, over 3000 serious injuries annually, and cost over $6 billion per year. Trucks deliver 72% of Australia's total freight. The quantity delivered by trucks has increased by 40% over a decade and will double over the next 20 years. If a 10% reduction in casualty truck crashes were to result from this study, the cost benefit ratio would be around 200 to 1.Read moreRead less

The Laboratory is aimed at developing and evaluating advanced traffic management and advanced vehicle technologies to improve the safety and efficiency of existing transport systems. The laboratory will comprise high-end computing and traffic simulation workstations with live real-time connections to a test-bed. The live link to the test-bed is a unique feature of the proposed facility. It will provide researchers with access to field data from sensors, videos and detectors to test prototypes of systems and evaluate their performance under live traffic conditions.Read moreRead less
Driving in the Fog: Speed Illusions Caused by Variations of Object Contrast. Accurate judgement of the speed of 3D motion is essential to many real world tasks, from driving a vehicle to playing sports. Illusions of perceived speed can occur when the range of brightness levels (ie. the contrast) is reduced, such as in fog, when suffering from cataracts, or when using some sunglasses. This raises issues of safety for drivers (pilots/captains etc). It is expected that advances in the understanding ....Driving in the Fog: Speed Illusions Caused by Variations of Object Contrast. It is expected that advances in the understanding of these effects will inform road safety policy and practice to benefit drivers and pedestrians and to guide the manufacturing of eyewear and display devices (eg. military heads-up-displays). It is also anticipated that this project will be able to answer the much-debated question 'What colour should cricket balls be?'

It is believed that injury rates can be reduced and an active lifestyle encouraged by improving helmet performance and understanding factors that lead to non-use. As helmet use is mandatory it is important that Australians are provided with optimal helmets. The specification of product standards is also relevant for international trade agreements. In the next five years, four Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) will be developed to foster the wide applications of satellite navigation in our daily life. These new developments can certainly offer a variety of economic, scientific and social opportunities for Australia. This research project will develop a theoretically sound integrity monitoring procedure for the new generation GNSS receivers to check their own navigation performance. The contribution from this research, which is patentable, will bring a timely opportunity for local industry to develop new products towards a massive worldwide market and serve Australian users as well.Read moreRead less

Surveillance of moving objects is critical in numerous applications such as detection and recognition of motor vehicles. It is important for detection to be fast and accurate with low cost. In this project, we aim to implement a surveillance system consisting of an efficient algorithm on a PC network with a camera. Our detection algorithm will be achieved with an advanced and computationally powerful image representation for fast computation. Its accuracy will be enhanced by adapting a well recognized theory for fast removal of image noise. Our implementation on the PC network will provide a flexible and extensible platform for parallel computing to further reduce detection time while keeping costs low.Read moreRead less
Evaluation of profile edge markings as a road safety countermeasure: Analysis of crash statistics and on-road study of driver behaviour and attitudes. Fatigue contributes to 20% of fatal car crashes. Fatigue contributes to 20% of fatal car crashes. Profile line-marking (PLM) aims to reduce fatigue-related crashes by alerting drivers when they begin veering off the road. Substantial stretches are laid annually Australia-wide, although evaluations of PLM have been unsophisticated or flawed. We aim to improve understanding of PLM impacts by investigating: 1)beliefs/attitudes regarding PLM (e.g. "PLM damages cars"); 2)whether road-edge PLM increases head-on crashes; 3)the efficacy of PLM with more widely spaced "ribs", with and without separate raised pavement markers; 4)underlying mechanisms (e.g. reducing fatigue, increasing visibility during night/wet) in order to improve the efficacy and efficiency of PLM use.Read moreRead less

This project will develop and evaluate an Occupational Health and Safety competency framework for work related road safety practices within seven council operational vehicles fleets. The results from this research will apply to work related driving in numerous organisations and communities and it is expected that results will carry over into the public domain as organisations involved comprise employees that are representatives of local communities. The information obtained from this research will have economic implications in numerous small vehicle operations that currently lack resources to obtain and develop the information and outcomes of this research program.
