Transport infrastructure is one of the seven types of nationally significant critical infrastructure identified federally to ensure the continuity of essential services in the face of extreme events including terrorist attacks and natural disasters. This project aims to provide tools for determining the most cost efficient schedule of preventative strengthening works for road networks for reducing the disruption and recovery costs after extreme events. The project aims to develop a novel platform for increasing the resilience of road networks by blending transport resilience modelling and structural health vulnerability analysis of road infrastructure into one integrated spatially enabled road transport planning system.Read moreRead less

Summary
Optimisation of transit priority in a transportation network. This project is aimed at developing an optimised approach to combine various types of public transport priority in an urban network which can be used by transport planners to increase the efficiency of traffic movements and reduce traffic congestion. The case study is the network of Brisbane including all arterial and local roads.
The behaviour and design of composite columns coupling the benefits of high strength steel and high strength concrete for large scale infrastructure. This project will involve the development of a novel structural column system which will be more efficient, robust and require less maintenance than current systems. The outcomes will involve improved design methodologies which will enable large scale infrastructure to be enhanced and will involve the use of materials which improve sustainability.
Performance of Soft Clay Consolidated by Biodegradable and Geosynthetic Vertical Drains under Vacuum Pressure for Transport Infrastructure. The use of vacuum pressure and prefabricated vertical drains (PVD) ensures rapid drainage and consolidation of the clay, thus increasing its shear strength and bearing capacity while reducing long term deformation. ....Performance of Soft Clay Consolidated by Biodegradable and Geosynthetic Vertical Drains under Vacuum Pressure for Transport Infrastructure. Along Australia's coast, the abundance of soft clay often hampers the design and construction of transport infrastructure including embankments. The use of vacuum pressure and prefabricated vertical drains (PVD) ensures rapid drainage and consolidation of the clay, thus increasing its shear strength and bearing capacity while reducing long term deformation. The main aim of this project is to achieve technological advancement in sustainable and cost effective PVD-vacuum systems by minimising the time to achieve the desired degree of consolidation, thereby controlling post construction settlement and lateral movement. Extensive laboratory and field studies supported by numerical modelling aim to result in new industry guides and standards.Read moreRead less
