    Summary
    The regeneration niche of invasive plants: managing the weed-shaped hole. In Australia $20 million was spent on weed control in natural areas in 2001-02 and is indicative of the level of funding for weed control programs each year. An understanding of how current weed control programs affect the regeneration of weeds in the system will give us novel insights into the persistence of weed populations despite sustained investment in control. Environmental weeds threaten biodiversity and ecosystem .... The regeneration niche of invasive plants: managing the weed-shaped hole. An understanding of how current weed control programs affect the regeneration of weeds in the system will give us novel insights into the persistence of weed populations despite sustained investment in control. Environmental weeds threaten biodiversity and ecosystem function in unique Australian communities, better management of weeds will have conservation, ecosystem service provision and amenity values nationally. This project highlights the importance of understanding the weed regeneration niche for successful long-term and sustainable control.

Karrikins are a newly-discovered family of naturally-occurring plant growth regulators that stimulate seed germination and seedling vigour. They were discovered in smoke and while they are centrally important in fire ecology they have far wider significance since species from non-fire-prone regions also respond to karrikins. The aim of this project is to develop methods to induce abiotic (drought, temperature, salinity) and biotic (die-back disease) stress tolerance in Australian plants by simple treatment using signalling molecules (benzoic acid derivatives) for conservation and land rehabilitation. These molecules occur naturally in plants and non-toxic. Plant establishment in r .... These molecules occur naturally in plants and non-toxic. Plant establishment in rehabilitation programs are very low due to exposure to stress. Furthermore, the loss to agricultural and horticultural industries resulting from environmental stresses is very high. Outcome of the project is the availability of plants with multiple stress tolerance enhancing success of rehabilitation programs with flow-through benefits to horticultural and agricultural industries.

Fossil diatom assemblages, reflective of past water quality, and other fossils, will be exhumed from sediment sequences to reconstruct wetland conditions. The integration ....
