    Drosophila Quantitative Genomics. This research proposal will be a key element in the emerging program in evolutionary and ecological functional genomics at the University of Queensland. Our studies utilize modern genomics approaches to address diverse national priorities from conservation of biological resources in the face of climate change, to understanding how genetic history contributes to drug susceptibility. The research will contribute to the intellectual foundation upon which rigorous .... Drosophila Quantitative Genomics. Our studies utilize modern genomics approaches to address diverse national priorities from conservation of biological resources in the face of climate change, to understanding how genetic history contributes to drug susceptibility. The research will contribute to the intellectual foundation upon which rigorous environmental and biomedical research is built. Social impact will be seen in the training of a new generation of integrative genome biologists, and the shaping of attitudes toward the role of genetics in human biology.

Horticultural industries are attracted to the promotional ?point of difference? this offers. Many health-promoting compounds are antioxidants, including polyphenols that are abundant in fruit such as grape and citrus. Antioxidants are also involved in the plant's defences against abiotic and biotic stres .... Regulation of principal components of the antioxidant system in table grapes. Here, the WA Table Grape industry has committed funds for an APAI to study regulation of antioxidants in relation to nutritional and postharvest qualities. Effects of preconditioning with mild oxidative stresses will be assayed, postharvest, using molecular and biochemical techniques.

    An epigenetic basis for foetal programming. The social and economic impact of adult-onset diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and atherosclerosis is increasing. Evidence indicates that a mother's nutrition influences the risk of her children developing some diseases later in life. This proposal aims to elucidate the mechanism underlying this phenomenon. By understanding the mechanism through which maternal nutrition affects disease risk, we may make it possible to design early diagnosis and .... An epigenetic basis for foetal programming. Evidence indicates that a mother's nutrition influences the risk of her children developing some diseases later in life. This proposal aims to elucidate the mechanism underlying this phenomenon. By understanding the mechanism through which maternal nutrition affects disease risk, we may make it possible to design early diagnosis and intervention strategies. Our work may suggest intervention strategies - such as supplementation of at-risk mothers with key molecules such as methyl donors - during foetal and early postnatal life, which could be key to preventing premature morbidity and mortality.

    Programming of appetite and bodyweight by the interaction of maternal diet and angiotensin during peri-natal life. The project describes a phenotype for appetite and body weight that can be altered by maternal dietary omega-3 PUFA (environmental factors), at a critical period during peri-natal life (developmental phase) and that the effect on body weight is opposite when endogenous angiotensin is increased (hormonal factor). The project aims to discover how these different factors interact to p .... Programming of appetite and bodyweight by the interaction of maternal diet and angiotensin during peri-natal life. The project describes a phenotype for appetite and body weight that can be altered by maternal dietary omega-3 PUFA (environmental factors), at a critical period during peri-natal life (developmental phase) and that the effect on body weight is opposite when endogenous angiotensin is increased (hormonal factor). The project aims to discover how these different factors interact to produce the phenotype by defining the critical period and systematically identifying genes that are expressed during this period. The effect of manipulating maternal dietary omega-3 PUFA and the role of angiotensin will then be examined. The project will discover how genetic, hormonal and environmental factors interact during the perinatal period of life to program food intake and body weight in adult life.
