    Novel strategy for optimising fertilizer input coupled with organic residue management for sustainable reconstruction of jarrah forest ecosystem. This project is aimed at judicious management of the rehabilitation process following surface mining by reducing initial fertilizer input along with using organic residue accumulated following pre-mine clearing of vegetation. This approach has the potential for 'speeding-up' the ecosystem development process by initiating early microbial development in .... Novel strategy for optimising fertilizer input coupled with organic residue management for sustainable reconstruction of jarrah forest ecosystem. This project is aimed at judicious management of the rehabilitation process following surface mining by reducing initial fertilizer input along with using organic residue accumulated following pre-mine clearing of vegetation. This approach has the potential for 'speeding-up' the ecosystem development process by initiating early microbial development in rehabilitation practice and reducing the deleterious effect of heavy fertilization. Apart from these ecological advantages, reducing fertilizer application lowers minesite rehabilitation cost incurred by mining companies. This project will be the first attempt to use organic residue and streamlining the use of mineral fertilizers in mine rehabilitation practice.

    A comparative study of the distribution and spread of potential molecular markers for Mundulla Yellows disease. Mundulla Yellows (MY), a newly recognised widespread lethal disease of Eucalyptus spp.in Australia, is a serious threat to national biodiversity and conservation. It is contagious, apparently biotic, but the causal agent is unknown. Identification of the cause is essential to establish sustainable control measures. We have detected a range of MY-associated RNAs constituting a disease ' .... A comparative study of the distribution and spread of potential molecular markers for Mundulla Yellows disease. Mundulla Yellows (MY), a newly recognised widespread lethal disease of Eucalyptus spp.in Australia, is a serious threat to national biodiversity and conservation. It is contagious, apparently biotic, but the causal agent is unknown. Identification of the cause is essential to establish sustainable control measures. We have detected a range of MY-associated RNAs constituting a disease 'fingerprint'. To identify individual RNAs uniquely associated with MY we aim to compare MY-RNA fingerprints from a range of affected species from different sites and with varying symptoms. Candidate RNAs will be cloned both for establishing molecular diagnostics for MY and identifying the cause.

Ericaceae are important components of the Australian flora in many habitats, including forests and fragile alpine regions that are significant to Australia's cultural and natural heritage, and several species are considered threatened. This project addresses the fundamental question of whether networks of symbiotic fungal mycelia act as below-ground bridges between Ericaceae plants and tree roots. If d .... This project addresses the fundamental question of whether networks of symbiotic fungal mycelia act as below-ground bridges between Ericaceae plants and tree roots. If demonstrated, this would alter current views of carbon and nutrient cycling in Australian forests and provide the basis for better informed decisions for the sustainable management of Australian forest resources. This is particularly important in the context of carbon sequestration and future climate change.
