The Initiative will survey the volume, range, impact, and international status of Asian area research in Australia, identify themes with high potential for achieving significant outcomes through transnational research and research-training, and develop a strategy for maximizing national research capacity in targeted areas through a national inter-disciplinary network for Asia-area research - Network Asia.
Outcomes include a published report on the state of the field and a strategic plan for a viable and sustainable research network.

Malaria is not only a major global health problem, but also affects countries neighbouring Australia like Indonesia, reducing the region's stability and prosperity. Environmental changes and increased mobility of people (aid and military personnel) make Australia itself more prone to malaria. Obduction, lithospheric flexure and basin formation. The proposal aims to investigate the links between hydrocarbon basins and obduction, or emplacement of oceanic crust onto continental margins. Obduction of the Samail Ophiolite of Oman onto the Arabian Peninsular at a time of the world's largest hydrocarbon accumulation, requires a causative relationship. This event remains poorly constrained and controversial, and therefore limits exploration models for hydrocarbons. Understanding the dynamic ....Obduction, lithospheric flexure and basin formation. The research will investigate current and potential future roles of diasporas in both Australia and overseas in facilitating trade and investment. The study will examine their political, cultural and kinship ties with homelands and map the geography of seven diasporas in Australia. This will provide new data that describes the character, motivations and movements of diasporas in Australia. This is a stock-taking initiative to examine the strength and limitations of Australian-based research on Islam and Muslim Societies. It will survey current research activity across social science disciplines and explore its contribution to our understanding of issues and challenges that are often attributed to Islam and Muslims. The compiled research profile will also test the degree to which current research on Islam and aspects of Muslim lives has informed the policy-making process in the 'war on terror'.
