However, the need for customised composition of Web services is likely to emanate from non IT-experts.
The project aims at designing, implementing, and evaluating an environment for the specification and execution of composite Web services by non-expert.Read moreRead less

Breakthrough nanotechnologies based on quantum mechanics promise important new devices with many applications in information and communications technologies. For example, quantum computers promise an enormous increase in computing power, allowing fast and complex processing in areas such as database searching, gene sequencing and weather modeling. This new collaboration brings together researchers from major national Centres in Australia (UNSW), Great Britain (University of Cambridge) and the USA (Harvard University) to tackle one of modern sciences most challenging problems - how to control and manipulate quantum states.Read moreRead less

organizations to form alliances by connecting their applications and systems, in order to offer ``one-stops shops'' for their customers. However, several important issues (e.g., security and privacy) need to be properly addressed before Web services technology meets the requirements of critical applications such as e-goverment. This project aims at providing privacy preserving Web services composition techniques. The anticipated outcome of this project is a service composition framework that provides seamless interoperability between different Web services without violiating citizens and organisations privacy.Read moreRead less
Acoustic Filter Functions from Morphological Measurements. This project works toward enabling the broadcast of high-fidelity 3D audio. By developing an efficient technique for deriving personalised acoustic filter functions based on image data of the listener's head and ears, we hope to enable high-fidelity 3D audio decoding and rendering. Morphological parameterisation techniques and databases recently developed at the University of York will be combined with the statistical synthesis techniques and databases developed at the University of Sydney to substantially reduce the development time required for either group alone. Psychoacoustic experiments carried out at the University of Sydney will demonstrate the fidelity of the delivered 3D audio.Read moreRead less

Document Classification has an enormous relevance in an era where large amounts of textual information is available. Document Classification is based on statistical and machine learning techniques that model documents represented as points in a multidimensional space. The Computer Engineering Laboratory (CEL) has ongoing projects using neural networks and other techniques for document classification. We are developing a development environment for large classification tasks, and Prof. Lee¡¯s work will focus in managing large amounts of data for them. Using his experience in data compression, databases and web applications, he will produce a set of tools for handling Gigabytes of textual data in our classification environment.Read moreRead less
A new erasure resilient technique for encoding internet packets. Efficient internet communication tolerates losing some packets sent across the web by sending a bit more information than is required. The benefit to the Australian partner will be the gaining of skills in internet search engine design, originating from the Italian partner's group. The benefit to the Italian partner will be the gaining of skills in research techniques, e.g., utilising a support vector machine as a classification tool, data mining techniques developed originally by the Australian partner's group, and in further developments of these techniques with specific applications to the internet web page mining problem.Read moreRead less
Investigations into machine learning applications in link analysis. Link analysis is an emerging tool for the detection of patterns in structured data. The detection of pattern in such data can lead to the detection of fraud occurrence, security breaches in computer systems, and patterns of social interactions with a community. It is also popularly applied to applications such as Web search engine designs and marketing analysis. This project aims to advance the area of link analysis by allowing the incorporation of contextual information which accounts for relationships among actors properly. Advances in link detection will allow improvements in security and Web services on which a wide field of national bodies rely. This project can help to place Australia at the forefront of this research area.Read moreRead less
Extensions to the page scoring algorithm in internet search engine studies. This project proposes to study two extensions to the Page rank equation which is one of the theoretical underpinning of Google's web page scoring engine. This project proposes to study two extensions to the Page rank equation which is one of the theoretical underpinning of Google's web page scoring engine. In particular, we wish to explore ways to combine page connectivity and page characteristics in the scoring of web pages. This will be the first time a rational way is proposed for combining these two factors. The expected outcome will be a deeper understanding on how these two factors affect the scores of a web page in a search engine, and hence how they affect the visibility of the page in response to a query.

Garbage collection is a key component in the automatic management of storage in computer systems. It is an essential property of modern programming systems that frees the programmer from a significant error-prone task. Our interest is in garbage collection in distributed systems involving a number of networked computers. Using our novel construction methodology, we have jointly produced a family of collection algorithms that are significantly simpler and more efficient than previous work. Here we wish to extend this family to operate effectively in a specific architecture increasingly favoured by many modern distributed high-performance computing systems.Read moreRead less
