The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) invites you to participate in a short survey about your
interaction with the ARDC and use of our national research infrastructure and services. The survey will take
approximately 5 minutes and is anonymous. It’s open to anyone who uses our digital research infrastructure
services including Reasearch Link Australia.
We will use the information you provide to improve the national research infrastructure and services we

This project aims to devise a novel Internet of Things (IoT) sensor sharing marketplace that permits IoT applications to discover, integrate, and pay for any IoT sensor data that is made available by other parties. The project will devise highly-scalable sensor classification, query processing, and transactions solutions and incorporate them in a pair of novel blockchains that work in tandem to securely manage all the information and contracts needed by IoT applications to discover, integrate, pay, and use sensors provided by another parties. These IoT advancements will provide significant economic, environmental, and social benefits via making low-cost and immediate sensing available across the world.Read moreRead less

Towards a stronger proof system for combinatorial optimisation. Combinatorial optimisation problems such as staff rostering, vehicle routing or resource allocation are central to the efficiency of many businesses and industries. This project will improve optimisation technology by using the low-level structure of the problems to find better solutions. This will save time, money and reduce environmental impact.

FlashLite: a high performance machine for data intensive science: The 21st century has been described as the century of data. Experts predict an exponential growth in the amount of data that will be captured, generated and archived. Australia has made significant progress towards addressing some of the opportunities and infrastructure challenges posed by such rapid increase in data volumes. However, these investments do not address the growing need to process data. Conventional supercomputers are unable to meet the challenges of the data explosion. The large gap in latency and bandwidth between the processor, memory and disk subsystems means that the processor is often idle waiting to fetch data. This project will build a platform focussed on data intensive science.Read moreRead less
Optimal control with decentralised information. This project will deliver optimisation-based tools to underpin systematic engineering approaches to the management of complex and networked systems arising in diverse areas. Optimal control for achieving guaranteed behaviour finds application in transport, resource management and distribution, telecommunications, and robotics and automation.
Effective image search and retrieval through automatic image annotation. This project aims to develop an effective and efficient image retrieval system, so that images are retrieved as easily as textual data. The project researches and develops several key know-hows in image retrieval. It enables Australia to maintain significant advantage in the frontier technology of information processing.

Universal optical transmitter for rapid prototyping and system emulation: This Project proposes an integrated, multi-user facility for the generation of extremely wide-bandwidth optical communication signals that will help to dramatically improve the data-handling capability of optical fibres and improve the energy efficiency of optical communication networks. The project will modulate the input of an advanced optical transmitter with multi-level, multi-phase signals at multi-Gb/s rates to generate 'higher-order' modulation formats at multi- terra bits per second rates including orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM), Nyquist-wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM), regular WDM and Optical Time-Division Multiplexing (OTDM). With this transmitter the project will investigate advanced optical communications concepts including 'constellations' of phase and intensity, limitations of nonlinearity in optical fibres, signal regeneration, and all-optical routing.Read moreRead less
Emerging technologies for enrichment in old age: A critical perspective. This project aims to generate knowledge about older adults' experiences with emerging technologies used for social and emotional enrichment. This project aims to generate knowledge about older adults' experiences with emerging technologies used for social and emotional enrichment. Technologies like virtual reality are said to offer social benefits for those in advanced old age, but we have limited knowledge about the issues that can impede older adults’ experiences with these technologies and even cause harm for vulnerable users. This project seeks to identify empirically informed strategies for good practice in the design and deployment of emerging technologies for enrichment in old age. This should inform the future ethical design and use of emerging technologies to benefit the social and emotional well-being of older Australians.Read moreRead less

This project investigates the interrelated commemorative practices, technology platforms, and social formations associated with digital commemoration. The urgency of this project arises as diverse forms of digital commemoration are increasingly used to express grief, solidarity and community, but are also a source of public and often personal disquiet. Digital commemoration is an emerging and often controversial practice with important implications for social institutions, cultural conventions and personal values. This study makes a timely evidence-based contribution to an understanding of changing commemorative practices, their digital mediation, and the interactions between them.Read moreRead less

Coherent detection aided by high-speed electronic digital signal processors has transformed optical communications within the last decade. However, the high complexity of coherent detection has constrained its application to long-haul transmission. This project aims to propose a novel modulation format based on optical multiple-input multiple-output in Stokes space that can bridge the gap between coherent and non-coherent communication. The proposed research includes design, simulation, and experimental verification of the proposed Stokes vector detection. The successful implementation of the project is expected to provide enabling technologies to future high-speed transport for interconnecting data centres that underpin fast-growing cloud computing.Read moreRead less

This project aims to design and investigate innovative technologies to establish meaningful social connections between older people who are constrained by limited mobility. Older adults who participate in social activities benefit from enhanced wellbeing, but social groups are often inaccessible for those in advanced old age, especially if living in rural areas. Emerging technologies, such as depth cameras and body tracking, can be used to augment limited bodily movement via avatars. These can be represented in virtual communities to foster social inclusion. The expected outcome of this project is a new technology that uses whole-body interactions and representational avatars to improve social inclusion for older adults in rural and urban settings.Read moreRead less
