. Technology has the potential to transform the means for scholarly collaboration and communication. Our proposal will achieve this potential, by deploying open source infrastructures to create new communication platforms. The Initiative will itself use collaborative writing systems to construct and energise the Network, which will match researchers requiring these new technologies with those who have the skills to build them. The outcomes will be an increase in the efficiency of traditional research collaborations as well as new kinds of collaboration and communication, for researchers and consumers of research across a range of disciplines.Read moreRead less
Middle Classes, New Media and Indie Networks in Post Authoritarian Indonesia. The study shall deepen Australians' appreciation of a little-known but strategically-placed facet of Indonesian society. It shall enhance understanding of the opinions, worldviews and cultural productions of young Indonesians, and of the culturally specific character of their digital engagements. The study shall deepen Australians' appreciation of a little-known but strategically-placed facet of Indonesian society. It shall enhance understanding of the opinions, worldviews and cultural productions of young Indonesians, and of the culturally specific character of their digital engagements. In its focus on urban middle class Indonesians, the project shall produce new and detailed knowledge about the cultures and lifestyles of one of Australia's most important higher education markets, and its role in the society. Finally, the project shall deepen the Australian public's understandings of Indonesia as an increasingly complex, disjunctive society.Read moreRead less

We will bring to Australia the state of the art research approach, theoretical and experimental, aiming to uncover and realize the potential of long range interaction between laser light and nonlocal liquid crystals for futuristic all-optical devices. This project will promote and enhance the rapid development of photonics in Australia, as well as deliver foremost practical expertise and outstanding training of young researchers.Read moreRead less
Pop Cultures in Indonesia: a New Asian Politics of Pleasure and Identity. The study addresses one of National Research Priorities (Goal 4 'Safeguarding Australia'), by better 'understanding our region and the world', and boosting Australia's 'soft power'. Recent changes in Indonesia render much of our knowledge about that society outdated. The study will deliver a significant contribution to the urgent revitalisation of Indonesian and cultural studies. It will hopefully elevate the quality of our public debate about the world's largest Muslim populated country and Australia's neighbour, by paying serious and overdue attention to the brightest sides of contemporary Indonesia that have occupied the minds of one hundred millions or so ordinary people there.Read moreRead less

Inspired by wonder about the cosmos, it stimulates public interest in science, so leading to the training of highly skilled graduates. In turn, this drives the development of technologies needed to pursue the science. The nation has invested in the technology for millimetre-wave astronomy, building the first interferometer in our hemisphere. This equipment will capitalise on this investment, extending the capabilities of the Australia Telescope to maintain it as a front line instrument, attracting the best scientists here to use it. This will help nurture a vigorous radio-science community, one able to actively participate in the billion-dollar investment being made internationally in the field.Read moreRead less

The newly-upgraded CSIRO Australia Telescope Compact Array, together with the CSIRO Mopra Telescope, provide a unique and powerful combination for studying the millimetre-wave emission from molecules and cold dust in star formation regions. We propose to combine the astrophysical expertise of UNSW with the instrumental expertise of CSIRO to use these instruments to study the processes of star formation. There are two parallel themes to this research: to commission and develop optimal techniques for using the new instruments, and to make use of them to explore the poorly-understood processes that cause stars to form.Read moreRead less
The Evolution of Dwarf Elliptical Galaxies: Nature or Nurture? From observations obtained at world-class facilities such as Gemini, this international team of experts will determine whether it is the intrinsic properties of dwarf Ellipticals (nature), or the influence of a neighbouring large galaxy (nurture), that determines the history of star formation in these small galaxies. Studies of local examples of this galaxy type, which may be the first objects formed in the Universe, have shown an u ....The Evolution of Dwarf Elliptical Galaxies: Nature or Nurture? From observations obtained at world-class facilities such as Gemini, this international team of experts will determine whether it is the intrinsic properties of dwarf Ellipticals (nature), or the influence of a neighbouring large galaxy (nurture), that determines the history of star formation in these small galaxies. Studies of local examples of this galaxy type, which may be the first objects formed in the Universe, have shown an unexpected and unexplained diversity of star formation histories. The outcomes of this research are relevant to the evolution of stars, the evolution of the chemical elements, and to the formation of larger galaxies.Read moreRead less

Indigenous education centres have evolved and emerged across Australian universities for over thirty years, yet there has never been an independent chronological study of their historical development at the national level. This research documents the visions of those people who instigated the early development of Indigenous education centres in higher education, recording how their early development influenced or was influenced by Indigenous communities and individuals, or by government and university policies. From their humble beginnings right through to their present day expansion and diversity, the project aims to become an important contribution towards Aboriginal history and Australian higher education studies.Read moreRead less
Where the Really Hard Problems Are: Beyond the Decision Case. This is a project in empirical artificial intelligence. We study factors affecting the average difficulty of computing optimal or near-optimal solutions to instances of problems whose worst cases are typically intractable. We study factors affecting the average difficulty of computing optimal or near-optimal solutions to instances of problems whose worst cases are typically intractable. Most existing research on the distribution of hard instances concerns decision questions, where the issue is whether solutions exist or not. We seek comparable results for optimization, where the goal is the best solution, and for approximation, where the goal is a good solution. Expected outcomes include new heuristics for search algorithms, new methods for predicting search costs, and explanations of the average case behaviour of algorithms.Read moreRead less

By means of its high resolution and (MS)n capabilities, the FT-ICR-MS will provide key structural information on a wide range of synthetic and natural chemical substances, including sequence (e.g. peptides) and fragmentation patterns, while the MALDI-TOF instrument will be used primarily for high through-put proteomic analyses.Read moreRead less
