This project will address some key fundamental issues associated with advancing a chemical entity from proof of principle through to a new pharmaceutical. The compounds in the study target cancer, cataract and other diseases that are confronting Australia's ageing population.
Biogenesis of the relict plastid of Apicomplexan parasites: the role of a dynamin-related protein in apicoplast division. The Apicomplexa are a group of intracellular parasites that cause several important diseases. Most Apicomplexa contain an organelle called the apicoplast that is indispensable for their survival and that can only form through the division of pre-existing apicoplasts. This project will examine the molecular mechanisms of how this process occurs.
A critical public health examination of complementary self-medication in later life in indigenous, non-indigenous and CALD communities. This project aims to provide the first in-depth coordinated critical public health examination of an unregulated and 'covert' area of health and treatment seeking behaviour - complementary self-medication (CAM SM) use in later life. It will focus on healthy ageing and living with chronic illness and draw upon fieldwork with Indigenous, non-Indigenous and cultura ....A critical public health examination of complementary self-medication in later life in indigenous, non-indigenous and CALD communities. Playful engagement and dementia: understanding the efficacy of applied theatre practices for people with dementia in residential aged care facilities. In the absence of a cure for dementia, there is an increasing recognition of the need to address its key impacts of social isolation, depressed mood and quality of life. This project will make use of a range of theatre techniques to develop improvised interactions and playful connections with the person with dementia.

Ultra-high resolution and advanced analytical scanning electron microscope facility. This scanning electron microscope facility will form an essential part of characterising a broad range of material types, from nanometre sized particles through to cells and their interactions.
Innovative multiscale modelling to explore mechanical properties of single living cells. This project will develop a new modelling platform to explore the relationship between living cell mechanical properties, their response to mechanical loads and their biological functions. Providing knowledge beyond current experimental measurements, this model will support studies into new treatments and preventions for diseases.
