This project aims to develop a novel device, comprising advanced single molecule imaging, microfluidics and immunoassay technologies, for quantification of milk protein variants. Milk quality is central to dairying and variants of proteins in milk affect its market value. No current milk protein detection technologies are readily applied in milk production quality control. This project aims to produce a device that can be used by milk producers and farms to profile protein variants with high sensitivity in a single test in an hour and screen unwanted protein contamination. The platform also has great potential for detecting other complex and low content analytes. It builds on innovations in nanoparticles and recent industry collaboration.Read moreRead less
Machine Learning for Fracture Risk Assessment from Simple Radiography. This project aims to develop a novel, reliable, low-cost system to detect poor bone health and assess fracture risk to help to prevent and manage osteoporosis-related fractures. Currently, osteoporosis-related fractures cost our health system millions of dollars annually and costs are increasing with our ageing population. Early detection of poor bone health will improve the effectiveness of preventive measures and ease this ....Machine Learning for Fracture Risk Assessment from Simple Radiography. Early detection of poor bone health will improve the effectiveness of preventive measures and ease this burden. Current methods include unreliable, crude clinical and visual guides that suggest osteoporosis screening. The project plans to develop a novel system by applying machine learning algorithms to radiology data which is commonly captured for diagnosing other conditions.Read moreRead less
Improved effectiveness of cochlear implants through new simultaneous stimulation techniques. Cochlear implants have brought the gift of hearing to 250,000 people worldwide and are an excellent example of Australian innovation. This project will examine an improved "high fidelity" stimulation strategy with the objective of defining a safe stimulus range for clinical use and providing a commercial advantage for Cochlear Ltd.
Improving road safety: advanced hybrid vehicle-based technology for monitoring driver drowsiness. Innovative technology geared towards reducing road accidents and fatalities (for improving public health) will constitute major socio-economic benefit to Australia. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau notes fatigue as a major cause of road accidents (2006). The World Health Organisation dedicated World Health Day 2004 to road safety and emphasized the importance of combating fatigue ('Road Safety ....Improving road safety: advanced hybrid vehicle-based technology for monitoring driver drowsiness. Innovative technology geared towards reducing road accidents and fatalities (for improving public health) will constitute major socio-economic benefit to Australia. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau notes fatigue as a major cause of road accidents (2006). The World Health Organisation dedicated World Health Day 2004 to road safety and emphasized the importance of combating fatigue ('Road Safety is no Accident'). This research will develop an innovative driver drowsiness detecting technology. With drowsiness attributable to substantial road fatalities, this technology aims to reduce this emotional and socio-economic burden on the community, contributing to national and community benefit by providing a safer road environment.Read moreRead less
Radio resources and inter-cell interference management in smart grid wireless access networks. Wireless communications is the key enabler of smart grids. The project will deliver novel radio resource allocation protocols with low latency, high radio spectrum efficiency and reliability for radio access networks in smart grids. The project will develop new technologies with a potential to be implemented in future Long Term Evolution (LTE) machine-to-machine (M2M) standards.
Plant plasters: Efficient spray micro-coatings for plant delivery. This proposal will study and apply recently-discovered methods of strongly attaching beneficial chemicals to plant leaves, stalks, and fruit. The materials have an unusually good ability to stick to crop plants and deliver herbicide or pesticide active ingredients more efficiently than standard additives, without toxicity. Recent findings have shown significant health risks from commercial herbicide additives and their run-off in ....Plant plasters: Efficient spray micro-coatings for plant delivery. Recent findings have shown significant health risks from commercial herbicide additives and their run-off into vulnerable ecosystems like the Great Barrier Reef. This project will explain the unusually effective, but simple, adhesion and delivery performance, incorporate the new additives into commercially-relevant formulations for our industrial partner, and work to deliver the materials at relevant manufacturing scales.Read moreRead less

This project will develop novel, state-of-the-art circuits and design strategies that overcome the challenges of current and future Integrated Circuit (IC) fabrication technologies. The extremely small sizes of transistors in these technologies offer advantages in speed, but at the price of a number of drawbacks, which the project will aim to overcome in this work. This research will make a significant contribution to the field of IC design as well as providing training for students to fill the present and future needs of Australia's IC design companies. Some of the most advanced cochlear implants, mobile phone ICs, and Wireless Internet ICs have been designed in Australia, and companies in Australia desperately need graduates skilled in designing in the latest technologies.Read moreRead less
Indoor Photovoltaics Enabled by Wide-Bandgap Perovskite Quantum Dots. This project aims to develop a high-efficiency indoor photovoltaic (PV) technology to provide reliable low-cost power in the multi-billion dollar “Internet of Things” (IoT) market. This project aims to design, test and deploy a practical and highly secure anonymous access system for online businesses that offer services on a free trial basis. Currently, online businesses are unable to take advantage of feedback from customers during and after trial periods; nor do currently available mechanisms offer practical privacy protection to customers. The project expects to overcome these barriers by developing innovative cryptographic solutions and security testing methods that will inform new protocol design and implementation, which will bring long-term benefits to online businesses and their customers. The project also aims to develop new, distributed ledger technology, which is a strategic technology trend. This will provide significant benefits such as a practical, reliable and highly secure anonymous access system for online businesses, in Australia and worldwide, that offer services on a free trial basis, which would enable these service providers to add value to and enhance their product offerings.Read moreRead less
