Understanding how cells can sense and respond to mechanical environment such as dynamic blood flow represents a fundamental question in the emerging field of mechanobiology. This project develops new biomechanical engineering approaches to determine the critical interrelationships among fluid flow disturbance, platelet clotting and the mechano-sensitive signal transduction mechanisms of integrin receptor – the most important mechano-sensor implicated in cell adhesion, migration, growth and survival. Specifically, it integrates nationally unique cutting-edge techniques including single-molecule force probe, microparticle image velocimetry, microfluidics and molecular dynamics simulation, super resolution and 3D volumetric imaging modalities.Read moreRead less

Elucidation and characterisation of the misfolded protein interactome. Correct expression, folding, and clearance of proteins are critical for all cell functions. However, cell stresses and aging can cause protein balance mechanisms to become overloaded, resulting in the misfolding and aggregation of proteins. Correct expression, folding, and clearance of proteins are critical for all cell functions. However, cell stresses and aging can cause protein balance mechanisms to become overloaded, resulting in the misfolding and aggregation of proteins. Understanding the mechanisms by which protein aggregation occurs and how to prevent the process have become major scientific challenges. This project aims to gain unprecedented insights into the interactors, effectors and fate of misfolded protein aggregates within cells, using new, cutting-edge, catalytic-tagging biochemical tools. Critical interactions will be investigated for their roles in protein aggregation cell death, and in whether modulation of the interaction can also mitigate or reverse the process.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop efficient nanoscale light and sound sources and merge them on an extra-thin surface. Interactions between light and sound waves at the macroscopic scale are used every day, such as in non-destructive testing and contact-less imaging. However, research into nanoscale light-sound interactions is new and has not realised its full potential. This project intends to develop ultra-compact sources of light and sound, tune them effectively, harness them simultaneously, and convert one to another efficiently, all crucial for real-world applications. This research is expected to improve technologies that use light and sound, including microscopy and spectroscopy.Read moreRead less
Optical phased array for space debris tracking and manoeuvring. Space junk in low Earth orbit is increasing at an alarming rate, jeopardising our access to critical navigation, communications, weather and natural disaster warning services. This project will prevent collisions of debris with satellites by developing a new laser system called an optical phased array to track and remotely manoeuvre space debris.
Mitigating the Severity of Level Crossing Accidents and Derailments. Ongoing increases in the number of level crossings and heavy road vehicles cause more frequent and severe level crossing accidents and derailments. Despite the use of active warning systems, each year, on average, 100 level crossing accidents occur in Australia. With a view to mitigating these crashes, this research aims to formulate theories for reduction in crash energy and effective wheel constraints to prevent derailment by ....Mitigating the Severity of Level Crossing Accidents and Derailments. Ongoing increases in the number of level crossings and heavy road vehicles cause more frequent and severe level crossing accidents and derailments. Despite the use of active warning systems, each year, on average, 100 level crossing accidents occur in Australia. With a view to mitigating these crashes, this research aims to formulate theories for reduction in crash energy and effective wheel constraints to prevent derailment by modifying the levels of road and rail crossings and providing guard rails in the recesses of these modified level crossings. The theories are intended be developed using nonlinear dynamic computational methods and laboratory experiments. The outcomes are expected to enable reduction in the severity of level crossing accidents and hence save lives and costs of derailment.Read moreRead less

The SAMI facility: a revolutionary multi-object hexabundle spectrograph. SAMI is a new Australian instrument concept that uses fibre bundles to obtain detailed spectroscopic data at many positions across the face of numerous galaxies at a time. Now that the technology has been shown to work, with spectacular results, the project aims to turn this concept into a general-user facility at the Anglo-Australian Telescope.
