This project will conduct a longitudinal investigation of the psychosocial adaptation of refugees with insecure and secure residency over a period of three years. This project will identify longitudinal trajectories of adaptation in refugees with insecure and secure residency, investigate flashpoints where refugees’ psychological adaptation deteriorate ....The impact of insecure residency on adaptation of refugees in Australia. Screening and responding to domestic violence experienced by refugee women. We will adapt and test an evidence-based intervention to identify and address domestic violence with newly arrived refugee women, partnering with Settlement Services International, one of Australia’s largest providers of settlement programs. Domestic violence is the lead contributor to premature death among Australian women, and costs $22 b each year, with refugee women at heightened risk. The Syrian conflict has generated an unprecedented flow of refugees across Europe and other countries, including Australia. These countries face new challenges in providing successful settlement outcomes for the refugees. This project will document perpetrators’ creation of racist content, internet users’ exposure to cyber-racism, the capacity of regulation to manage the impact, and how social media can help communities to resist cyber-racism.
The meaning of rights across cultures: an exploration of the interpretation of the human rights framework in refugee settlement. This project will examine the meaning of rights for refugees and explore how the human rights framework is interpreted and applied to the experiences of settling refugees. This project will develop alternative modules of response to guide settlement policy and practice, and will inform theoretical understandings of the meaning of rights across cultures.

This project aims to investigate how Australian Muslims are negotiating increased surveillance and public hostility and how this impacts on their sense of belonging.
