Watching migrating whales: ensuring the sustainability of a growing whale-watch industry. Whale-watching is a huge growth industry, contributing $270 million to Australia in 2003. Yet most whalewatching targets species listed under the EPBC Act 1999 as species slowly recovering from massive overexploitation. Current protection measures are historical (ie best-guess) rather than scientific in origin. Oceans Law and Policy Library. This project will establish a library facility providing a comprehensive collection of international and domestic primary and secondary source materials in ocean law and policy. Materials will be both hard copy and electronic, facilitating access of materials from remote locations by partner institutions. The library will be located at the University of Wollongong, an international leader in oceans law and policy research, through the Centre for Maritime Policy. ....Oceans Law and Policy Library. This project will establish a library facility providing a comprehensive collection of international and domestic primary and secondary source materials in ocean law and policy. Materials will be both hard copy and electronic, facilitating access of materials from remote locations by partner institutions. The library will be located at the University of Wollongong, an international leader in oceans law and policy research, through the Centre for Maritime Policy. The partner universities are home to the principal centres of marine scientific research in Australia. Foregrounding the suburban backyard: using hybrid spaces to develop new environmental theory for more effective management of human landscapes. Although human influences now pervade all Earth processes, environmental ideals of pristine past landscapes without people continue to dominate. The project addresses the challenge of managing environments for hybridity, change and human presence, rather than timeless purity. I will undertake the first in-depth ethnographic study of the suburban backyard, Australia's most hybrid ecosystem. I analyse how categories of environmental belonging - indigenous/introduced, wild/tame, hybrid/pure - are differentially applied to people, other species and landscapes, in policy and popular culture.
