Flow measurement for large-scale industrial aerodynamics. This project aims to research the unsteady aerodynamic wakes of cars, trucks, athletes, turbines and micro-air vehicles. Researchers will use the flow measurement system for large-scale industrial aerodynamics to resolve high speed and large scale industrial flows. This project aims to propose a new conceptual design of an internal aircraft electrical system and its control, which minimises the issues of traditional power systems and takes advantage of contemporary control and technology advances to minimise weight/volume and maximise reliability. The project will target a specific design, which includes consideration of novel power electronic topologies, to achieve these goals. CoopEcoSafe: a new cooperative, green and safe driving system. Road transport plays a vital role in our economy but generates huge costs in road trauma and greenhouse gases. Eco-driving has been trialed as a cost-effective approach to reducing fuel consumption, but little research has examined its effects on safety. This research brings together disciplines of road safety, psychology and engineering to address the fundamental question: how can mobility be greener while being safer? Eco-driving has been trialed as a cost-effective approach to reducing fuel consumption, but little research has examined its effects on safety. This new system should overcome high-load particulate emissions and high-cost fuel injection systems, which limit further improvement of diesel engines. Turbulent wall-bounded flow in adverse pressure gradient environments. This research will create additional research capacity in turbulence control and drag reduction. Summary
Novel anodic coating of magnesium alloy components for corrosion protection. This research aims to protect magnesium alloys from corrosion, paving a path for them to be used as auto and aircraft components. It will establish novel protective anodic coatings upon magnesium and thereby pioneer implementation of magnesium alloys more generally, as galvanising did for steels.
High performance cast magnesium alloys. Reducing the weight of cars, particularly their engines, enables substantial reductions in fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. A new generation of magnesium alloys will be developed by this project for the manufacture of considerably lighter components with improved mechanical performance for powertrain and structural applications.
