This project aims to investigate policy failure of gender equality initiatives and specifically, how institutional and individual resistance to gender equality is applied and adapted over time and across different contexts in construction, Australia’s most male dominated sector. The Intergenerational Transmission of Joblessness. Behind the scenes: diversity management paradigm shifts and sticking points. Many Australian organisations miss out on the potential benefits of workforce diversity because they do not manage diversity effectively. This project will investigate how organisations can initiate and direct change processes to manage diversity more effectively, and as a result, experience higher productivity and employee engagement.
The impact of institutional pressure on the management of organisational gender diversity. Women’s low representation in senior management and boards led to the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) requiring listed companies to report on gender diversity. This project examines if women’s representation is changing in response to the ASX requirements and identifies organisational strategies for achieving sustainable gender diversity.
COVID-19, health and labour market marginalisation . This project aims to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on labour market marginalisation in Australia. It seeks to generate new insights about whether the global economic shock had a disproportionately negative effect on the employment circumstances of working-age Australians with mental health and musculoskeletal/pain conditions, which are the leading causes of disability in Australia. Making a life with less: youth underemployment over the life course. This project aims to investigate the experiences and impacts of underemployment on young people. Using high-quality longitudinal data and qualitative interviews, this project expects to generate new, foundational knowledge about the employment pathways young people take following underemployment and the strategies they use to mitigate its effects. Labour, race and belonging: strengthening Rural Workforces and Communities. This project aims to strengthen understandings of race and labour relations in Australia’s horticultural industry. Horticulture is Australia’s third largest agricultural industry and the seasonal nature of work in this industry poses challenges for workforce recruitment and development. Such challenges are often framed in terms of economic and policy considerations, but debates about the ‘backpacker tax’ and exploitation ....Labour, race and belonging: strengthening Rural Workforces and Communities. This project aims to strengthen understandings of race and labour relations in Australia’s horticultural industry. Horticulture is Australia’s third largest agricultural industry and the seasonal nature of work in this industry poses challenges for workforce recruitment and development. Such challenges are often framed in terms of economic and policy considerations, but debates about the ‘backpacker tax’ and exploitation suggest that there are also complex racial dimensions associated with the industry.
