The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) invites you to participate in a short survey about your
interaction with the ARDC and use of our national research infrastructure and services. The survey will take
approximately 5 minutes and is anonymous. It’s open to anyone who uses our digital research infrastructure
services including Reasearch Link Australia.
We will use the information you provide to improve the national research infrastructure and services we
deliver and to report on user satisfaction to the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research
Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) program.
Please take a few minutes to provide your input. The survey closes COB Friday 29 May 2026.

The development of a rapid diagnostic test for heparanase activity. Heparanase is an enzyme that has been implicated in a number of disease states such as cancer, arthritis, multiple sclerosis and other inflammatory diseases. Characterisation of this enzyme has been slow, due in part to the lack of a reliable direct activity assay. Using a multi-disciplinary approach, this project seeks to establish a rapid assay that will provide easy determination of heparanase activity. Furthermore, this assay could provide a useful diagnostic tool in a clinical environment that would allow for the rapid assessment of these diseases, their progression and indeed response to therapy.Read moreRead less

Disease diagnosis, chronic disease monitoring and stress monitoring all are limited by diagnostic systems that are attached to patients by wires restricting the recording of such parameters to limited intervals in the clinician's office. The proposed system will enable patients to have a range of physiological parameters recorded without the attachment of wires. This will enable extensive periods of diagnostic data to be recorded to characterize respiratory, cardiac and other parameters during extended periods, and during normal daily activity. In addition the system can be used to monitor patients with chronic disease and detect trends in their disease.Read moreRead less
Lipidomics Associated with Metabolic Syndrome, Aging and Metabolic Variation between Species. The aim is to apply state-of?the-art mass spectrometry to identify and quantify alterations in membrane lipidomes (i.e. lipid classes, molecular species, structure alterations and by-products) related to two major health problems facing Australia i.e. the Metabolic Syndrome and an Ageing population plus insight into the variation in metabolic rate between organisms. This research offers the opportunity for the development of mass spectrometry based technologies for the early clinical diagnosis of metabolic disorders plus provides a template of information for our Linkage partner (AstraZeneca) to develop pharmaceutical therapies targeting key molecular lipid species identified as critical to particular membrane functions.Read moreRead less

Alternatively, recombinant proteins can be produced in extracts prepared from cells or organisms. The aim of this proposal is to develop a new technology that will make cell-free production of recombinant proteins rapid, cheap, and scalable. This will advance Australia’s intellectual leadership in the area of biotechnology and will bring numerous economic benefits by accelerating pharmaceutical development. Read moreRead less
Molecular approaches to solving current and emerging problems in the epidemiology and diagnosis of Marek's disease in Australia. Marek's disease (MD) is a ubiquitous viral disease of chickens that is currently controlled in meat chickens by blanket vaccination of all chickens. However, as has happened overseas, the efficacy of the HVT vaccine being used in Australia is breaking down resulting in subclinical and clinical losses due to MD. To assist industry deal with this situation we propose to develop novel molecular methods for the quantification of Marek's disease viruses (MDV) in the host and the environment, to use these methods to design effective early monitoring systems for MD in broilers that predict disease and performance outcomes, and to develop an epidemiological model that will predict the spread and severity of MD as failure of vaccinal protection progresses.Read moreRead less
Identification of novel biomarkers in tears for prostate cancer diagnosis and prognosis. The purpose of this study is to identify novel biomarkers in the tears of patients with CaP. The use of the several techniques will increase the chance of success and enable us to find more diagnostic markers. If successful, the identified proteins may be used to diagnose and determine the stage of cancer. This will help guide clinicians in choosing the best treatment methods for an individual patient. The use of the several techniques will increase the chance of success and enable us to find more diagnostic markers. If successful, the identified proteins may be used to diagnose and determine the stage of cancer. This will help guide clinicians in choosing the best treatment methods for an individual patient. The markers may also be used to monitor the disease progress and the effects of treatment. The results from this study may improve the prognosis of CaP patients.Read moreRead less
Innovation Management Strategies and Practices to Accelerate the Commercialisation Process in the Biotechnology Industry. The innovation cycle is a complex and misunderstood area of management, particularly in the Biotechnology Industry where the innovation cycle can take up to 15 years. The management literature provides anecdotal information, however, lacks theoretical models which provide guidance to Managers on how to shorten the innovation process. Therefore, the aim of this PhD research, which is "a world first", is to develop and test an innovation cycle model through quantitative and qualitative research. Expected outcomes include developing a valid and reliable model for measuring and predicting relationships between innovation practice and innovation performance and developing case studies for teaching purposes.Read moreRead less

The aim of this project is to develop new technology for in vitro production of pharmaceutical proteins using plant tissue culture. Animal proteins such as antibodies are currently being produced using recombinant plant systems in bioreactors; however, transient gene expression using genetically-modified viruses has a range of potential benefits for substantially increasing foreign protein titres. Because viruses rapidly infect plant tissues and can be amplified to extremely high levels, this new method for in vitro foreign protein synthesis has considerable promise. This project will extend the existing science of plant tissue culture into new areas with commercial potential.Read moreRead less

Improving the sensitivity and availability of in-vitro immuno-diagnostic tests is a critical goal towards developing real time efficient tools for the detection of infectious diseases, cancers, allergies and auto-immune diseases. The goal is to increase the sensitivity of these tests by reducing background noise that has been a feature of the commonly used ELISA technology. This will be achieved by developing a novel optical integrated waveguide array supporting a large range of distributed tests, including several based on a novel multi-colour detection scheme. This massively parallel approach will underpin a new generation of low-cost, efficient diagnostic tests.Read moreRead less
