PET-CT which combines two imaging modalities in one device. While this technology is very new and has great potential in cancer and brain disorders, it also poses major challenges for information processing and transmission. We will address these challenges by developing advanced algorithms that optimally extract information from PET and CT using mathematical models that correct for the various sources of inaccuracy. Our research will put Australian biomedical researchers and healthcare professionals at the forefront of advanced medical imaging technology.Read moreRead less

This project focuses on the investigation of new indicators for early detection of upper airway obstruction (UAO)-which is a common sleep disorder in children. Failure to treat UAO can result in serious adverse outcomes including failure to thrive, neurocognitive deficits, developmental delay, behavioural disorders and cardiovascular disease. Thus, early treatment of UAO will significantly improve quality of life for the child. Direct benefits to community health via reduced costs for medical treatment will also be a key outcome. The establishment of new diagnostic indicators will form the basis of new tools for identifying child sleep disorders and contribute to advancing Australia's international leading position in health technology. X-rays are invaluable in medical diagnostics. For example, they are widely used in breast screening programs. However, they can cause cancer even at low doses. Consequently there is a global effort to reduce the X-ray dose by exploring more efficient imaging technologies. The present proposal seeks to exploit our recent discovery of a highly efficient storage phosphor that has the potential to facilitate substantial X-ray dose reduction; this is of greatest significance to the general population. Also, the phosphor facilitates higher resolution images, a feature that is highly important in scientific imaging. This project may lead to substantial revenue streams for the nation because it taps into a global multibillion dollar industry.Read moreRead less

A rapid and general means of in-situ pathogen identification would benefit the community by ensuring that appropriate treatments can be applied in the early stages of a disease. Patient prognosis is thereby improved and opportunities for multi-drug resistant organisms to arise are limited. Time-gated luminescence microscopy (TgM) exploits persistent luminescence to overcome autofluorescence, a serious problem in pathogen detection. Drug-resistant 'Golden Staph' (MRSA) will be used as the model organism to evaluate TgM efficacy. Ultimately however, TgM will be applied for the detection of tuberculosis, a highly contagious disease affecting the respiratory system of more than one-third of the world's population.Read moreRead less
