Predicting the diagnostic performance of individuals and organisations. This project aims to address diagnostic error in advanced technology systems, by providing a mechanism to assess and improve individual diagnosticians’ performance. Organisations that rely on their employees’ diagnostic skills rarely assess them once the operators become qualified, so there is no basis for interventions that might prevent diagnostic errors affecting thousands. This research tests a new method of assessing diagnostic skills based on how skilled operators respond to cues. This project will test how employees’ diagnostic skills change and whether this change corresponds to measures of organisational performance. This research is expected to provide organisations with a tool to pre-empt diagnostic errors that could minimise costs to the economy.Read moreRead less
Technology optimisation of integrated circuits with applications to wireless communication systems in medicine. This project will define and verify methods to help engineers pick the best technology for designing critical wireless monitoring systems used for medical devices. This project will also verify these methods by developing a wireless, implantable blood pressure monitor with real-time video.
Engineering the next generation of scaffolds. Engineering the next generation of scaffolds. This project aims to develop high efficiency quantum dots based on carbon nanomaterials, integrated with scaffolds and viable tissue cells, which can be used to develop smart implants with monitoring capabilities to reduce patient trauma and expenses. In certain cases, more than 50% of medical implants fail. Improving effective intervention is urgently needed, particularly monitoring of implants and early ....Engineering the next generation of scaffolds. Improving effective intervention is urgently needed, particularly monitoring of implants and early diagnosis to prevent rejections and adverse reactions. Current methods are inefficient, expensive, and induce toxicity. A non-toxic and non-invasive method to monitor the progress of tissue regeneration and wound healing is expected to place Australia at the forefront of developing implants.Read moreRead less
Rapid detection of rare-event cells by strong UP-conversion
encoded nano-radiators (SUPER Dots): finding a needle in a haystack. Current diagnostic tests are not sensitive enough to detect cancer in its very early stages or early recurrence following treatment. The new technologies developed by this project will be able to find single cancer cells in blood and urine samples heralding a new era in medical diagnostics.
Med-Graphic Avatar - a comprehensive, holistic and customisable model for personal health records. Our customisable Med-Graphic Avatar will open up unprecedented access, intuitive interpretation, smart utilisation, and new understanding of massive, diverse health data, and will herald a revolution in patient-centric, holistic medical care, synergising with next generation of participatory, personalised, preventative and predictive eHealth.
A gold-coated magnetic nanoparticle biosensor for detecting microRNA. The project aims to develop a biosensor for detecting short sequences of RNA, called microRNA (miRNA) in blood. There are about 100 miRNA sequences that are involved in most biological processes. Changes in the levels of some miRNA sequences can serve as a biomarker for many diseases including cancers. The miRNA will be detected using gold-coated magnetic nanoparticles modified with DNA sequences complementary to the miRNA of ....A gold-coated magnetic nanoparticle biosensor for detecting microRNA. The miRNA will be detected using gold-coated magnetic nanoparticles modified with DNA sequences complementary to the miRNA of interest to capture the miRNA. Application of a magnetic field allows the levels of miRNA to be detected electrochemically. The expected outcome is a commercialisable biosensor for miRNA both as a diagnostic early detection device and a prognostic device for a range of miRNA biomarkers.Read moreRead less
Proteomic study of urine to discover novel biomarkers for human prostate cancer. The purpose of this project is to identify novel markers in the urine of patients with prostate cancer. These biomarkers may ultimately prove useful in the development of novel diagnostic tools for the management of this disease.
Highly multiplexed rapid-analysis microarrays for early disease diagnosis. Molecular diagnostics are revolutionising the treatment of disease in hospitals by providing rapid and accurate identification of pathogens; saving costs, time and lives. This project will accelerate this revolution by combining new array technology from the University of Sydney with a proven multiplex method from the Sydney based company, AusDiagnostics.
High performance, optimized chip-scale packaging for millimetre wave and THz integrated circuits. This project aims to revolutionise electronic packaging by depositing a thin, protective layer of diamond on top of high-performance, millimetre-wave and THz integrated circuits. This project aims to revolutionise electronic packaging by depositing a thin, protective layer of diamond on top of high-performance, millimetre-wave and THz integrated circuits. Leveraging existing technology for removing heat from high-powered optical electronics, the project aims to deliver a miniaturised packaged chip, protected from the environment and ready for mounting in a system, without seriously degrading the circuit's performance as occurs in current packaging technologies. The project aims to enable cheaper and more energy-efficient applications as wide ranging as wireless HD video, multi-gigabit telecommunications, and black-body passive imaging technologies for security, defence, medical and agricultural applications.Read moreRead less
