Efficient and scalable middlewares are an important part of our current competitive economy. This is particularly important in Australia where production and population centres are spread over large distances. As a result, inefficiencies in web-based disparate businesses are likely to have a strong impact on the national economy. This project will provide an integrated framework and solutions to urgently needed integration problems faced by current industries. The development of a reliable and flexible infrastructure will benefit small and medium-scale enterprises, as they will be able to participate in large-scale supply chains and expand their business, without having to invest in expensive new computer systems and software.

Mobile services (M-Services) are rapidly growing due to enormous proliferation of web services and of the wireless networks. However, because of the high dynamic nature of the Internet as well as the specific requirements of mobile environments, existing M-services have limitations as they lack support for flexible transactions. The aim of this project is to design an efficient mobile transaction-based infrastructure to support highly adaptable M-Services. This infrastructure will provide robust and efficient management of business transactions across different enterprises. The outcomes of this project will include a set of advanced techniques and algorithms that will form the basis of the next generation of mobile web services.

Existing electronic commerce have shown profound limitations when dealing with key issues related to electronic commerce applications, such as data interoperability, mobility and performance. The aim of this project is to understand the complexity of the underlying problems related to electronic commerce applications, and to subsequently produce a robust and efficient infrastructure to support them. It is significant because it is expected to automate most of the tedious and complex activities of on-line transactions. The main outcome will be a set of techniques and programs that will form the basis of the commercial software, with a significant export potential.

This project will help programmers correctly use data that originates at various times and places, and spreads unevenly through a system. Computation will combine data that comes from different situations, and is not exactly consistent. Capability to develop high quality software on platforms with this feature will enhance the value of the Australian IT industry. As well, the industries which use the software benefit from correctly working with their data. Sensor networks have data like this, and they play a vital role in environmental monitoring. Cloud computing platforms also have this type of data, and these allow smaller enterprises to grow smoothly, without needing large up-front investments in computing infrastructure.

Investigation and Development of Parallel Large Scale Record Linkage Techniques. Record linkage aims at matching records of the same entity (like customer or patient) in large (administrative) databases. The outcomes of the proposed research will improve current techniques in terms of efficiency, accuracy and the need for human intervention. Through experimental studies and stochastic modelling the performance of traditional and new methods for data cleaning, standardisation and linkage will be assessed. The effect of the statistical dependency of attribute values will be studied. New methods using clustering for blocking large datasets, and predictive models including interaction terms will be implemented, analysed and evaluated on high-performance computers and office-based PC clusters.

This research will develop totally new techniques for exceptional pattern discovery that are useful for deeper understanding data mining and capturing the hidden interactions (class-bridge rules and out-expectation patterns) within data. This will enable Australian data marketers to access valuable implicit information that is contained in their data, but not currently accessible. The outcomes will keep Australia in the international leading edge and preserve its competitive status in preemptively defining the information market of tomorrow. To 'Frontier Technologies for Building and Transforming Australian Industries', discovering new exceptional patterns within data will lead to increased efficiency in Australian Industries.

Efficient Strategies for Mining Negative Association Rules. Negative association rules (NAR) catch mutually-exclusive correlations among items. They play important roles just as traditional association rules (TAR) do. For example, in stock market surveillance based on alert logs, NARs detect which alerts are false. There are essential differences between mining TARs and NARs because NARs are hidden in infrequent itemsets. This research will develop efficient strategies for mining NARs in databases. These strategies are expected to be about ten times faster than existing ones. This project will deliver database-independent and high-performance mining algorithms for decision-making. The results can benefit Australian marketing and financial companies as well as health and security departments for smart information use.
