Using new bioinformatic methods, this project aims to identify new classifiers of different stem cell populations, develop statistical models that address population heterogeneity and provide molecular predictors of the differentiation potential of stem cells. Understanding, predicting and directing the processes of differentiation are major goals in the disciplines of stem cell biology, developmental biology, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Molecular atlas projects have successfully revealed rules of genome output and regulation, by mining patterns that are evident across multiple cell types and datasets. By applying this philosophy to relevant, well-curated stem cell experiments, this project aims to create new methods for the integration and interrogation of smaller individual datasets. These methods should have broad utility and enable new avenues in tissue engineering.Read moreRead less
Accurate analysis of combinatorial problems: from the particular to the general. Combinatorial problems pervade all aspects of our social, environmental and economic life, but finding good solutions to these problems can take too much computer time. This project will develop new analysis tools that are effective at reducing this time, thus allowing for better solutions to be found.

Online disinformation is a global problem that threatens national security and is harmful to society. However, current methods are not suited to detect coordinated disinformation operations that conceal their activity by co-opting and cultivating regular users, groups and social movements. This project develops cutting-edge methods and workflows to accurately distinguish genuine activity from coordinated inauthentic behaviour, and to trace and evaluate the adoption of material spread by malicious actors across multiple platforms.Read moreRead less
Facilitating business process standardisation and reuse. One of the most pressing management challenges of today's organisations lies in the reuse and standardisation of best practices across different sectors, products or units. This project will develop an innovative open-source software platform and governance structure to efficiently and effectively support best practice standardisation and reuse.
Making the Pilbara blend: agile mine scheduling through contingent planning. Mine scheduling is a challenging problem for Rio Tinto which annually mines more than 200 Million tonnes of iron ore. This project will develop agile scheduling techniques of great economic importance to Australia. Carefully planned scheduling reduces infrastructure and minimises environmental impacts, maximising regeneration after mining.

The Internet of Things (IoT) together with the rising popularity of smartphones opens a new world for many exciting opportunities. The overall goal of this project is to develop new algorithms and data analytical techniques in an IoT environment that can accurately monitor and analyse personalised daily activities on a continuous, real-time basis. The expected result of this project will support many critical applications such as better wellness tracking and lifestyle-related illness prevention, which will be particularly critical to Australia's aging population. This project will also serve as a vehicle to educate and train Australia’s young scholars and engineers.Read moreRead less
Information Systems (IS)-Impact utility and intuitiveness: a rigorous approach to relevance. This study aims to evaluate the key elements of models used in design science to assess the impact of information systems. The work will examine the extent to which rigour and relevance are incorporated into these models.
Digital noticeboards for remote Aboriginal communities: bringing web 2.0 participation to non-western cultures with low English and technical literacy. Remote Aboriginal communities suffer from geographic and cultural isolation. Web 2.0 offers a solution yet is ill-suited to traditional collective cultures, those with low English and technical literacy, and the poor. This project will produce novel public web-enabled touchscreen noticeboards and table tops suited to traditional cultures.
Designing, implementing and evaluating a youth mobile help-seeking tool-kit. This project aims to design, implement and test a novel model of integrated mental health service that links a new mobile interactive tool-kit for self-directed help-seeking with existing traditional helpline services for young people. In partnership with Australia’s largest youth counselling service, Kids Helpline, the project seeks to investigate mobile technology in youth counselling and develop new understandings of ....Designing, implementing and evaluating a youth mobile help-seeking tool-kit. This project aims to design, implement and test a novel model of integrated mental health service that links a new mobile interactive tool-kit for self-directed help-seeking with existing traditional helpline services for young people. In partnership with Australia’s largest youth counselling service, Kids Helpline, the project seeks to investigate mobile technology in youth counselling and develop new understandings of blended traditional and mobile mental health interventions. It aims to design and evaluate an interactive tool-kit that provides credible health information through mobile devices, improving the quality and credibility of digital services to benefit the wellbeing of young Australians.Read moreRead less

The project will enable automated re-engineering of enterprise systems, to allow them to reused in Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications. It will support efficient ways in which the core business logic of these large scale and monolithic systems can be extended into resource control and data sensing functions managed through the IoT. The project will develop a novel, fine-grained software architecture style suitable for localised IoT execution, through microservices executing autonomously on nodes of IoT fog networks. It will develop new techniques for automated discovery of microservices from enterprise systems and the verification of future-state system execution based on current-state behavioural and other properties such as security.Read moreRead less
