A Distributed Virtual Factory in Agile Manufacturing. The aim of this research is to develop an Intelligent Distributed Virtual Factory consisting of several distributed precise simulation models connected by several synchronisation mechanisms named Time Bucket algorithms. Intelligent Distributed Virtual Factory will then be applied into precise evaluations of the whole manufacturing system under two major types of manufacturing operational logics, PULL and PUSH methods.
A Gesture-Based Interface for Designing in Virtual Reality. Other areas, such as films, computer games, user interface design that involves storyboarding and visualization may also benefit from sketching in virtual reality. Further research may be carried out using a variety of VR facilities and a responsive workbench (3D interactive table-top display) to allow distributed Virtual Prototyping between geographically separated design teams, to assemble the product drawn using a force feedback device to place Australia in a leading position.Read moreRead less

The proposal seeks to initiate the development of a GrEMLIN, a Grid Enabled Multi-Level Instrument Network, for e-Research. Scientific instruments, whether at conventional laboratories or at major facilities, may be regarded as specialised ICT components in a network providing remote access to such instrumentation. Collaborative remote access and data analysis brings efficiency and effectiveness dividends, that can be enhanced through the harnessing of Grid technologies. The collaborative project will leverage middleware, Web Services and e-Science software developments in the US and UK, to provide Grid enabled remote instrument access and data analysis as a powerful e-Research tool.Read moreRead less

This project will develop tools and knowledge to assess and improve the environmental performance and visual impact of design proposals prior to construction. The design simulation technology proposed here will allow stakeholders to concurrently test socio-cultural and functional performance over time, will allow more informed decision making and make a significant contribution to the social, cultural and economic life of Australia. The augmented reality technology to be developed in this project also has significant potential for applications in other domains and industries such as landscape and parks management.Read moreRead less
Acoustic Filter Functions from Morphological Measurements. This project works toward enabling the broadcast of high-fidelity 3D audio. By developing an efficient technique for deriving personalised acoustic filter functions based on image data of the listener's head and ears, we hope to enable high-fidelity 3D audio decoding and rendering. Morphological parameterisation techniques and databases recently developed at the University of York will be combined with the statistical synthesis technique ....Acoustic Filter Functions from Morphological Measurements. By developing an efficient technique for deriving personalised acoustic filter functions based on image data of the listener's head and ears, we hope to enable high-fidelity 3D audio decoding and rendering. Morphological parameterisation techniques and databases recently developed at the University of York will be combined with the statistical synthesis techniques and databases developed at the University of Sydney to substantially reduce the development time required for either group alone. Psychoacoustic experiments carried out at the University of Sydney will demonstrate the fidelity of the delivered 3D audio.Read moreRead less

The ability of any large corporation or public institution to handle a crisis can have major economic, environmental, social or cultural consequences. For the Australian Defence Force (ADF), effective crisis management communication can literally mean life or death. This project merges cutting-edge digital games technology with applied drama techniques to produce a crisis management game to simulate conflict and crisis scenarios. Working closely with the ADF to better understand organisational communication under extreme pressure, this new approach will build teamwork and break down barriers to effective crisis management. The methodology developed will have global application to public and private organisations.

The project will locate development and regional cultural understanding within an enriched historical perspective, drawing on cross-disciplinary research and using digital animation in particular to display the 'presence of the past in the present', to explore and promote distinctive and sustainable modes of living, and to construct visual hypotheses for environmental and cultural development in each area.Read moreRead less
Training for critical thinking and decision making under stress associated with workplace accidents and disasters. Workplace accidents are a major concern for employees and employers alike. In the past two years, StateRail lost 7437 workdays to accidents, resulting in physical and mental distress for the employees, and considerable financial loss to the company. This project will test the effectiveness of employee training in critical thinking and decision making. Workplace accidents are a major concern for employees and employers alike. In the past two years, StateRail lost 7437 workdays to accidents, resulting in physical and mental distress for the employees, and considerable financial loss to the company. This project will test the effectiveness of employee training in critical thinking and decision making. In particular, the use of virtual environments will be investigated as a means of simulating physically and mentally stressful situations. Ultimately, the projects seek to devise a training programme which will reduce the likelihood of accidents and improve employee response in the event that they occur.

The completion of the human genome marked the culmination of one hundred years of reductionist science in cell biology. Although further bioinformatics analysis will continue, the focus is shifting towards synthesis and understanding how the regulatory genetic components dynamically interact to form functional phenotypes. The key to this is the understanding of the roles of stochasticity in cellular processes. This project will explore these roles and will develop an integrated complex systems modelling, simulation and visualisation framework for exploring and validating genetic regulatory models in general. This will be used on an exemplar application for understanding the induction process in lambda phage.Read moreRead less
