Intelligent Transport and Vehicle Systems Research Laboratory. This proposal seeks funding to establish a world class Intelligent Transport and Vehicle Systems Research Laboratory. The Laboratory is aimed at developing and evaluating advanced traffic management and advanced vehicle technologies to improve the safety and efficiency of existing transport systems. The laboratory will comprise high-end computing and traffic simulation workstations with live real-time connections to a test-bed. The live link to the test-bed is a unique feature of the proposed facility. It will provide researchers with access to field data from sensors, videos and detectors to test prototypes of systems and evaluate their performance under live traffic conditions.

Both pedal and motor cyclists are exposed to risks of head and neck injury. These injuries occur in young people and can have substantial health and economic impacts on the individuals and society. It is believed that injury rates can be reduced and an active lifestyle encouraged by improving helmet performance and understanding factors that lead to non-use. As helmet use is mandatory it is important that Australians are provided with optimal helmets. The specification of product standards is also relevant for international trade agreements.

Congestion management in key road networks of a major city through real time data collection, intelligent forecasting and real time routing. The project researches the issues for allowing Australian Road Traffic Authorities to automatically capture road traffic data, forecast traffic flows and smartly route traffic flows to avoid congestion on road networks. This will lead to several benefits, such as (a) reducing traffic congestion, shorten travel time and lower pollution, (b) better utilization of existing road infrastructure by diffusing traffic to alternate routes, (c) provide economic benefit by allowing one to delay infrastructure expansion, (d) monitoring of aberrant behaviour by road users to ensure a safer road environment, and (e) improved flexibility in deployment of the Wireless Sensor Network to meet the needs of the road authorities and community.

SmartData: developing intelligent database system for communicating information to aviation and professional vehicle operators: towards safer transport industries. Detriments in human functional state is a major problem in the 'round the clock' transportation industries such as heavy-vehicle industry and aviation. The repetitive and monotonous nature of the tasks in these environments lead to fatigue, inattention and stress. This project proposes a unique and innovative SmartData system that will interact with operators and their working environment to counteract detriments in human performance. The proposed SmartData system will have the capabilities of alerting and warning of potentially hazardous situations associated with degradations in human performance. This innovative project aims to improve the safety culture of two major transportation sectors.

Land use activity and transport provision represent important facets of the Australian economy (e.g., transport activities represent 17% of the total national gross domestic product). This project will improve significantly the ability of policy makers to make better and timely judgments about the virtues of specific land use and transport planning outcomes. The behavioural models to be developed will allow for greater sensitivity analysis to policy scenario planning, with measured impacts including forecasts of traffic levels and environmental impacts, especially greenhouse gas emissions and energy requirements.

National social and economic development is impacted and shaped by the quality of decisions made by industry leaders who work in uncertain and risky environments. Nowhere is uncertainty and risk greater than in the Australian business community where success or failure depends on the way relationships with suppliers and customers are managed. Supply chain relationship decisions are often made in situations and contexts in which there is inadequate theory, research findings, or more generally insufficient knowledge and experience. This study will provide a rare opportunity to learn from a global supply chain leader and thereby make a contribution to national social and economic prosperity.
