Parametric Brain Imaging via Modeling and Analysis of Electroencephalographic Signals. Parameters of brain function and physiology will be spatially imaged with high time resolution via their effects on electroencephalographic (EEG) signals, a form of imaging that is impossible with existing methods. This will be achieved by improving existing physiologically-based models of the generation of EEGs and developing analysis tools based on fitting of model predictions to multielectrode EEG data. The results will be used to probe spatiotemporal features of EEGs in normal subjects to explore the underlying fundamental mechanisms and to infer novel parameter variations of practical relevance.

Markov invariants and phylogenetic tree reconstruction. The project will assist Australia to progress as an innovator in the production phylogenetic tree reconstruction techniques. Identifying species is a difficult task with environmental, social and economic benefits to Australia. DNA evidence and phylogenetic methods clearly achieve this task. Conservation of rare species depends upon identification and hence robust phylogenetic analysis. Phylogenetically identifying fish species has economic importance as different fish species are all managed separately, having different catch limits, catch areas and market values. Using effective phylogenetic methods, epidemiologists can track the spread of a disease through a population.

Advances at the frontiers of subatomic physics and cross-disciplinary applications of the associated techniques. The candidate is an international scientific leader, in terms of his own research, his responsibilities within the United States Department of Energy (DoE) and his role as Chair of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) Working Group on International Cooperation in Nuclear Physics. His return to South Australia to establish a major new research centre in the physical sciences will dramatically enhance the State's reputation in science and engineering, an essential component of its contribution to the nation's defence. It will underline Australia's commitment to contribute its share to advancing fundamental science. The involvement of senior researchers from fields as diverse as applied optics and mathematical biology will ensure that the opportunities for cross-disciplinary research are fully exploited.

Nature displays intricate, self-organized structures and behaviors that often emerge from simple underlying rules. This project will explore and unify fundamental regimes of self-organization, and apply them to explain phenomena in space, plasma, and wave physics, including making key inputs to the international STEREO space mission. In a core initiative, sophisticated tools from these fields will be transfered and adapted to analyze self-organized brain dynamics, leading to the first self-consistent "working brain" model. The results of this innovation will be used to develop new imaging technologies, to probe brain function via the new windows they open, and to exploit them commercially.

Recent advances in biotechnology have seen its emergence as a highly quantitative, numerically-based discipline. To exploit the available data to the full will require, alongside computing power, new analytical techniques. This project aims to develop such techniques, by handling the systematics of the genetic code with methods derived from theoretical physics and chemistry. Expected outcomes include a dynamical (quantum field theory) model of phylogenetic branching, analyses of nucleic acid structure and content (spin chain models of RNA binding and of DNA open reading frames), and insights into the origin of the code itself (via numerical codon similarity measures).
