Atomic tests of unification theories. Although the standard model of particle physics has withstood decades of intensive experimental tests, it is widely believed to be merely a low-energy manifestation of a "true" theory that unifies the four forces of nature. Although the standard model of particle physics has withstood decades of intensive experimental tests, it is widely believed to be merely a low-energy manifestation of a "true" theory that unifies the four forces of nature. While some searches for new physics beyond the standard model are performed at high-energy particle accelerators, a very sensitive probe can be done at low energies in atomic and molecular measurements of weak interaction effects. This project is devoted to a theoretical investigation of weak interaction effects in atoms, molecules, and nuclei. It will provide improved tests of unified theories.

Developing and exploiting a beam of exotic neutron halo nuclei: probing quantum coherence and decoherence at the femtoscale. Developing an Australian rare isotope beam capability with unique features will be a breakthrough in Australia's capability in science. It will create new opportunities for local research with radioactive isotope beams, a field being vigorously developed world-wide, as new access to short-lived radioactive isotopes will open up many opportunities in fundamental research and applications. The experience and strong international linkages from this project will facilitate the longer-term use of future large-scale international facilities. This project will also build links with other areas of research strength in Australia, and keep us at the cutting-edge in research and training in nuclear science, a matter of national importance.

Advances at the frontiers of subatomic physics and cross-disciplinary applications of the associated techniques. The candidate is an international scientific leader, in terms of his own research, his responsibilities within the United States Department of Energy (DoE) and his role as Chair of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) Working Group on International Cooperation in Nuclear Physics. His return to South Australia to establish a major new research centre in the physical sciences will dramatically enhance the State's reputation in science and engineering, an essential component of its contribution to the nation's defence. It will underline Australia's commitment to contribute its share to advancing fundamental science. The involvement of senior researchers from fields as diverse as applied optics and mathematical biology will ensure that the opportunities for cross-disciplinary research are fully exploited.

Now, however there is evidence that there is physics beyond the standard model, and new and planned experiments will make the details of this new physics clearer in the lifetime of this grant. We will study a wide variety of systems, from the foundations of quantum mechanics to extra dimensions of space-time and much between and will find guides to the nature of the new physics.

The project will help to establish Australia among the leaders in important areas of modern science: tests of theories unifying all physical forces and cosmology, search for variation of the fundamental forces of Nature and making super precise atomic clocks. The atomic clocks are used in all navigation (current GPS and future Galileo) systems and many other important applications. The training of students and researchers combined with a rich international collaborative program will insure that Australia is well placed to prepare for the approaching revolution in physics and cosmology.

This first-principles study of quantum field theory will elucidate an outstanding mystery of modern particle physics. Understanding confinement is recognized as one of the top 10 Physics Questions to Ponder for a Millennium or Two. In support of the National Research Priorities, new scientific data visualization techniques will be transferred to industry, facilitating smart information use. Further economic benefits are realized through the training and development of expertise in high-performance parallel computing, promoting an innovation culture and economy. The opportunity for young Australian Honours and Postgraduate students to work at the forefront of nuclear and particle theory is an obvious social benefit.
