Designer Surfactants for Creation of Emulsion Properties. We propose new approaches to the design of surfactants for stabilising water in oil emulsions. New block copolymer surfactants may be "tailored" for head group structure and a pre-chosen hydrophilic/lipophilic balance at the oil-water interface using the Australian developed RAFT polymer synthesis method and polymeric inorganic species. The proposers have an extensive background in these areas.

SYNCHROTRON MICROPROBE METALLURGICAL CASE STUDIES. The micro-focus capabilities of synchrotron techniques (XRF, XRD, XAS) will enable the high resolution spatial correlations required to advance the understanding of the three systems to be studied:
- Activation for flotation of sphalerite with varying iron contents;
- Arsenic leaching as a function of local structure, phase and mineral assemblage;
- Optimisation of ferrous alloy microstructure on cryogenic treatment.

These case studies have been chosen to specifically target the minerals processing and manufacturing industrial sectors and will be used to increase industrial awareness of the potentials of synchrotron techniques prior to the commissioning of the Australian Synchrotron in 2007.

Electronic and Optical Properties of Doped Titanium Dioxide. Titanium dioxide, is widely used as a white pigment, owing to its high refractive index, second, only after diamond. Yellowing of rutile pigment particles, observed on prolonged exposure to sunlight, is a serious problem that pigment manufacturers would like to overcome. It is proposed that aluminium-doping of rutile limits this discolouration by altering the electronic structure of the rutile particles. The aim now is to ramify those discoveries both scientifically and technologically in the design of emulsion structure using our, now established, techniques. Milk protein denaturation and stabilisation at surfaces. The Australian Dairy Industry, valued at $2.8 billion in 2003-4, is ranked third among rural industries in Australia. Australia exports over 50% of its annual milk production, contributing to 13% of world trade. Exports of dairy products are valued at $2.4 billion.
