This project will be the first in Australia to integrate diverse types of urban data using an open-standard geospatial information model to research the outcomes of major urban renewal proposals in collaboration with both a state and local government planning instrumentalities.
Since the issues being addressed are common to every planning body in Australia, the flow-on benefits will be of national significance for future urban planning and management.
The research will place Australia at the forefront of international research to improve spatial information management that will inform planning decisions at the local and state level.Read moreRead less

In the next five years, four Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) will be developed to foster the wide applications of satellite navigation in our daily life. These new developments can certainly offer a variety of economic, scientific and social opportunities for Australia. This research project will develop a theoretically sound integrity monitoring procedure for the new generation GNSS receivers to check their own navigation performance. The contribution from this research, which is patentable, will bring a timely opportunity for local industry to develop new products towards a massive worldwide market and serve Australian users as well.Read moreRead less
Application of Advanced Geomatic Techniques to Heritage Recording of Greek Antiquities. Heritage recording documents archaeological sites for the benefit of future research and also to assess site degradation. This project combines the latest laser scanning technology, available through the ARC-funded LASCAN consortium, with satellite-based and digital photogrammetric survey techniques to develop a unique methodology for precise 3D recording of such sites. Records of archaeological test sites in Greece will contain unprecedented detail, comprising point clouds of greater than five million individual measurements, and spectral information in the infrared and visible wavebands. The large volume of data collected will be managed in a specially designed spatial database, accessible to the general public.Read moreRead less
Mobility and Location Information providing Social Equality for Blind and Vision Impaired persons. Providing reliable situational information to the blind and visually impaired (BVI) can deliver far greater independence. The current explosion of spatial data enables many new kinds of queries, but also raises technical issues. This project investigates such questions for online spatial data mining within the NSW Land and Property Information. The LPI will place its cadastral and land title information online during 2001 and plans to develop links to outside data holdings. These activities raise three key questions, with widespread relevance to other systems: finding practical approaches to processing queries in a distributed data warehouse; using adaptive agents to create robust, flexible spatial query systems; and identifying organizational models for commercialization of online spatial queries.Read moreRead less

Eccles lava flow: a GIS approach. The project focuses on analysis and interpretation of Digital Terrain Models, using Geographical Information Systems, produced from high resolution aerial photography of the globally significant Mt Eccles lava flow, Southwest Victoria. Via predictive modelling, we will identify the extent and status of archaeologically significant Indigenous eel aquaculture systems and dwellings; investigate land modification through simulation of past water flows; design protective measures for ecological/cultural heritage; provide a database for eco/cultural tourism and educational interpretation and ongoing archaeological and palaeoenvironmental research. The resulting information will be incorporated into management plans forming the basis of sustainable land/wetland projects and World Heritage nomination.projects and World Heritage nomination.Read moreRead less

The project will contribute significantly to the advancement of knowledge in breakthrough science in qualitative spatial reasoning and smart information use in geographic information systems. Expressive spatial languages are important in organising spatial knowledge, defining spatial query languages and guiding spatial data mining. Effective spatial reasoning mechanisms bring theory closer to applications including consistency checking and spatial query pre-processing. The project will help in extracting knowledge from massive spatial databases, meeting the growing needs of naive users for spatial information and establishing Australia as a major player in spatial cognition research and in the development of geo-location services.Read moreRead less

Economies require successful land markets to generate wealth. Our land administration systems are expensive but essential infrastructure for land markets. However, since they were designed 150 years ago, the market has invented complex commodities: time shares, unit and property trusts, financial instruments, mortgage backed certificates, insurance products, options, corporate development instruments, vertical villages, and more. The project will explain how modern land markets evolved and how land administration systems can be adapted to provide more efficient land trading and better support for trading in new complex commodities. CEWAY: Cognitively ergonomic wayfinding directions for location-based services. This project develops qualitative models of wayfinding directions based on landmarks (e.g., 'to the hospital') and common spatial predicates (e.g. 'near to'). These models provide a basis for selecting salient features in different contexts and combining these features with vague spatial predicates. This project develops qualitative models of wayfinding directions based on landmarks (e.g., 'to the hospital') and common spatial predicates (e.g. 'near to'). These models provide a basis for selecting salient features in different contexts and combining these features with vague spatial predicates. Such wayfinding directions require less cognitive workload and lead to higher success rates in wayfinding than current approaches. The project develops an integrated formal model of context-dependent salience and navigation under uncertainty. A demonstrator will be implemented based on the industry partners' software platform and data. Human subject tests using the demonstrator software will be used to verify the efficacy of our approach.Read moreRead less
