This proposal seeks funds for the purchase and installation of a state-of-the-art 400 MHz Wide-Bore Solid-State NMR spectrometer. Research projects utilising this euipment will benefit from the ability to probe the structure of solid samples that are difficult to characterise in any other way. These materials represent advances in nanotechnology, new materials and will impact on the analysis of environmental contaminants in potable water supplies, with a particular Australian focus on the identification of compounds formed as by-products during disinfection processes.
The upgraded facility will be the only one of its kind in Western Australia.

Optical floating-zone furnaces are powerful and efficient tools for the discovery and characterisation of new materials. They are widely used in the solid-state chemistry, condensed-matter physics, materials science, and engineering communities. This optical floating-zone furnace, the first in Australia, will support and encourage the growing number of local researchers in these fields. It will allow them to take much better advantage of the new research reactor and synchrotron being constructed in Australia by maximising their ability to grow crystals of technologically and scientifically important materials, particularly electronic and magnetic materials, for fundamental and applied research at those facilities.Read moreRead less

Magnetic materials are of huge importance to modern society because of the key roles they play in devices such as hard disks, sensors, switches and permanent magnets. This project will focus on the chemical design and synthesis of novel, flexible and unconventional magnetic materials. Their study will lead to improved theories of magnetism and superconductivity, and ultimately to technologies such as new data-storage media. The project will also help introduce Australian scientists to their new research reactor and synchrotron, which will play critical roles by allowing exceptionally thorough and systematic studies to be carried out.Read moreRead less

The aim of the project is to synthesize a systematic series of novel colossal magnetoresistance manganese, cobalt and iron based transition metal perovskite oxides in the forms of nano-structures, nano-structured composites and single crystals using advanced nano-technology and crystal growth techniques. Extensive fundamental studies on magnetoresistance, spin and change ordering, and nano-scale behaviors will be carried out by neutron diffraction, synchrotron radiation, transport and magnetic measurements over a wide temperature range and magnetic fields. The outcomes of this project are likely to lead to a better undertanding of the colossal magnetoresistance mechanisms, the discovery of fascinating new physical phenomena and suitable magnetoresistance materials for superior magnetic recording, sensing and switch devicesRead moreRead less

The ultimate aim of this project is to identify high performance, environment-friendly i.e. lead free, piezoceramic materials capable of replacing the currently market dominant, lead-based materials. Such piezoceramics have widespread industrial applications. Understanding the factors that control the capacity of such materials to respond to applied stress or electric field is critical to the discovery, optimization and, ultimately, industrial exploitation of such materials. Through comprehensive experimental and theoretical studies of a number of such materials this project will enhance the ability of industry to develop new and improved materials. Development of advanced materials is a designated National Research Priority area. Read moreRead less

The climate debate has put the issues that this research will address at the forefront of community concern. All of the initiatives discussed herein are relevant to alternative energy sources and greenhouse gas reduction. The facility will ensure that the research undertaken will be internationally cutting edge and will hasten the adoption of technologies that will flow from the research, thereby reducing the effects of the impending energy crisis and related global pollution issues. The current capability for accurately measuring gas sorption in materials for storage and sequestration is limited in W.A. and the proposed facility will address this situation.Read moreRead less
