The National Representative System of Marine Protected Areas contributes directly to the protection of marine biodiversity, and to Australia's international obligations under the UN Convention on Biological Diversity. Non-indigenous species have potential to undermine native biodiversity in marine protected areas across Australia. By identifying the most effective strategies for dealing with potential incursions of non-indigenous species in Victorian marine national parks and sanctuaries, the project will make a valuable contribution to the viability of local marine ecosystems and the maintenance of biodiversity. Furthermore, it will provide a template to aid similar decision-making in other marine protected areas around the country.Read moreRead less
Ethnographies of housing: exploring the role of housing officers in public housing service provision. This research examines the everyday practice of public housing officers working in the Victorian Office of Housing. It aims to analyse the ways that workers exercise discretion, and the patterns of meanings that they construct, through their interactions with clients, departmental managers and other human service providers. It is the first ethnographic study of front-line work in housing services in Australia and builds on comparable work done in the United Kingdom and America. The knowledge generated will inform innovation in public housing services, housing policy debates and emerging programs designed to integrate housing with other human services.Read moreRead less

This project will systematically assess the efficacy and appropriateness of five separate techniques for the recruitment of gay and homosexually active men in Australia. The project will use the data from the Australian Study of Health and Relationships to assess the representativeness of the samples obtained. Using theoretical considerations of the inter-relationship of identity, attraction and practice, the suitability of recruitment strategies for research projects addressing key elements of gay men's health will be assessed. As a by-product of the sampling exercise, a description of the key health concerns of gay and homosexually active men will be developed. Read moreRead less

A recurring contemporary theme across many social science disciplines is the significant role of social networks in shaping the course of interpersonal interactions and their cascading social consequences. The aim of this Initiative is to build a multi- disciplinary Research Network spanning the social and mathematical sciences that can develop a new interdisciplinary science of networks and network-based social processes. The Network's aims will be twofold: first, an interactive and accessible state-of-the-art research capacity in theory, methods and models for network processes; and, second, the capacity to apply new forms of network understanding to the design and evaluation of innovative intervention strategies for system-level community change.Read moreRead less
Ten Thousand Homeless People. Effective interventions to assist homeless people depend upon understanding the reasons why households become homeless. Effective interventions to assist homeless people depend upon understanding the reasons why households become homeless. This research will investigate people's pathways into and out of the homeless population, and explain why some households experience a short period of homelessness, whereas others remain homeless for a sustained period of time. The research will also investigate why some 'at risk' households become homeless. This will be the largest data base ever analysed on homeless pathways in Australia (N=10,000). The research will provide guidance for policy makers and service providers for some years to come.Read moreRead less

Recent years have seen increased concern about how economic, social and technological changes interact with experiences occurring within families, workplaces and communities. Understanding these forces, however, requires panel data that track agents over time. Australia has only recently begun investing heavily in such data, raising concerns about our capacity to capitalize on this investment.
The aims of this network therefore include:
· enhancing the capacity of researchers to undertake panel data research;
· promoting cross-disciplinary research using panel databases;
· facilitating opportunities for contact between panel data researchers; and
· promoting the use of appropriate methods for analysing panel data.
It is expected that large benefits will flow to the community, especially through improved and better informed public debate and government policy-making.Read moreRead less
A longitudinal study of the housing stability of the homeless in Victoria. This is a longitudinal panel study of the homeless in urban and rural Victoria; it will interview residents of transitional housing over two years, analysing factors that contribute to success or failure in achieving housing stability. The research starts from the assumption that homelessness is not simply a condition of being without shelter at a specific point in time, but is a situation of chronic housing instability. ....A longitudinal study of the housing stability of the homeless in Victoria. The project proposal has the support of a consortium of housing agencies in urban and rural Victoria who anticipate specific outcomes in service design evaluation and in detailed knowledge about the causes of homelessness.Read moreRead less

The study will support a robust biotechnology industry in Australia, which delivers economy-wide benefits and provides employment for local life scientists. Although Australia has a long history of innovation and achievement in the life sciences, commercial benefits in the field have often been harvested elsewhere. Australian governments are making substantial investments in biotechnology, including education and training, directed towards developing the local industry. The proposed study will make these investments more informed, facilitating fine-grained development of public policy and industry strategy.Read moreRead less

Victoria is the first jurisdiction in the world to proclaim an entire system of marine protected areas at once. The new management responsibilities have created imperatives for robust, scientifically defendable approaches to identifying threats, setting management priorities and developing monitoring systems. This project will develop, for the first time, a risk assessment protocol that has due regard for the perception of risks by individuals, and ensures that stakeholder values are an intrinsic part of decision-making. The protocol will create a system that stays faithful to the priorities of those who bear the risks, while using technical methods to ensure that models are consistent and that monitoring provides pertinent information.Read moreRead less

Australia has begun investing heavily in the collection of population-wide longitudinal survey data. Most of that effort has focused first on collection and dissemination and second on analysis, with scant attention paid to the quality of data collected. This is unfortunate given that longitudinal surveys exhibit many problems (e.g., attrition, panel conditioning, and seam effects) that are not relevant in more ubiquitous cross-section of surveys. Without adequate resources devoted to these methodological issues, the quality of substantive research will be questioned and interest from potential users decline. Maximizing the investment being made in longitudinal data thus requires a complementary investment in methodological research.Read moreRead less
