This project aims to investigate the possible benefits of 3D printing for production of accessible materials for vision-impaired people. Currently tactile graphics are used to provide severely vision-impaired adults and children with access to graphical content used in education and in orientation and mobility training. This project is expected to clarify the kinds of graphics for which 3D prints are better suited than tactile graphics, and to build capacity within the national accessible format provision sector for the production and use of 3D prints. Benefits will include increased educational opportunities and quality of life for Australians with severe vision impairment, through improved access to graphic materials used in education and orientation and mobility training.

Archives and records are the memory banks of healthy organisations, governments, communities and societies. This project aims to address systemic failings of current systems to meet identity, memory and accountability needs of individuals and communities in crisis. It will pioneer a new participatory methodology for archival design to deliver sustainable, dynamic, and integrated archival and recordkeeping systems. It will be developed through the co-design of an integrated archival access network for reconstructing identity and a life story archive system for children currently in care. This project aims to transform evidence and memory management into information infrastructure that better protects and respects human rights.Read moreRead less

Around 25 per cent of all Australians aged 12 to 24 are from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds. In collaboration with nine Australian organisations, the project aims to critically define the status of CALD youth; develop the first national status reporting framework for the group that will generate new social, economic and cultural indicators; and build a knowledge hub to store and curate CALD youth data. Data and understanding from this project is intended to enable governments to meet the group’s specific needs and enhance their opportunities.Read moreRead less

The number of Australians with unmet legal needs is estimated to be over four million people per year and growing, and free legal assistance is severely under-resourced. A bottleneck for free legal assistance providers is the determination of what (if any) specific legal needs the individual has, to which end this project proposes to develop AI models to semi-automate the process, with particular focus on fairness across users of all backgrounds, generalisation from small amounts of curated data, and dynamic interaction with the help-seeker. The project will help deliver legal assistance to some of the most vulnerable members of Australian society, and reinforce Australia's position as a world leader in AI for Law.Read moreRead less

This project aims to create a framework which allows authoring, reading and storing of tactile electronic books for people with vision impairment by using multi-touch, audio, and tactile technologies. The project expects to generate new knowledge in the areas of human computer interaction and information visualisation utilising new techniques to present visual information in the form of audio and tactile. Expected outcomes of the project are to reduce the cost of authoring accessible textual and graphical content, and to provide a practical and intuitive reading experience. This should provide benefits to people with vision impairment while accessing information in a more effective and efficient way.Read moreRead less
