Ageing is one of the most significant changes facing Australia. It is essential that Australia plans to achieve the opportunities as well as meet the challenges of ageing. The ARC Ageing Well Research Network will concentrate on the National Research Priority area 'Ageing Well, Ageing Productively'. It will generate innovative, multi-disciplinary approaches necessary to understand ageing people, relations between age groups, and the economic, social, and policy contexts that shape ageing experiences. It will bring together researchers and end-point users - including governments, consumers, employers, and service providers - informing research agendas as well as translating and applying findings to national goals.Read moreRead less
Growing Sustainable Regions: Developing a Rural Statistical Sustainability Framework. While there is a plethora of data that can provide this evidence-base, it is often complex, disorganised and inaccessible to those who need it. Hence, to facilitate smart information use, this research develops and implements a Rural Statistical Sustainability Framework and decision support modelling tool that integrates environmental, economic and social data into a single user-friendly source. This will provide a platform for evidence-based decision-making that will lead to a sustainable future for rural and regional Australia.Read moreRead less

Australia is a prosperous country, yet over recent decades many indices of the health and wellbeing of children and young people have deteriorated. Reasons for this are not well understood, and the nation is poorly equipped to devise effective, sustainable responses. Our vision is to create new ways of thinking and acting through new collaborations across disciplines, sectors and levels of government, with non-research communities of interest as full partners. The aim is to generate and apply new concepts and forms of knowledge, undergirded by comprehensive, better integrated data. Expected outcomes are enriched life chances for children and young people.Read moreRead less

Research across a range of disciplines is urgently needed to understand the complexity of pathways contributing to the healthy development of children and young people in modern societies like Australia and to develop effective strategies to improve them. Given our economic prosperity and the level of knowledge about human development, it is profoundly disappointing that many child and youth problems are increasing, creating a crisis in services. This application brings together a highly talented network of researchers to work collaboratively and innovatively with policy makers and those providing services, to enable both new knowledge and implementation of what we already know, to enhance children's futures.Read moreRead less

The network will build research enterprises that promote the health and well-being of children and young people through the enhancement of relevant public policy and civic institutions. It will bring together researchers from universities, government agencies, non-government organisations and peak bodies in recognition of the important research being done in and across these sectors. It will build on existing established, formal and informal relationships between researchers, as well as seek to forge new relationships. Finally, the network will produce new research agendas that address issues of pressing importance for the health and well-being of children and young people.Read moreRead less

Unique challenges face the residential aged care system because of the increased life expectancy of people with life-long intellectual disability and the likelihood of their premature ageing. Although this group is recognised by Federal and State governments as requiring specific and special service arrangements, little is known about adapting disability and aged care services to their needs, thus program development is in its early stages. This research will inform the development of policy and programs in the Aged Care, Disability and Health sectors with the aim of improving the quality of life for people with intellectual disability as they age.Read moreRead less

This project aims to provide a democratic procedure (deliberative processes) to enhance local government's ability to deal with contentious economic, social, and environmental issues. Instead of top-down communication methods (education and edict), two processes are evaluated: commitment and feedback to people as local leaders, and the deliberation of a citizen jury with access to expert knowledge. These processes will be simultaneously tested in
a mature (Ipswich) and emerging (Springfield) community with different demographic profiles. The expected outcome is greatly enhanced recycling output based on the enhanced citizenship of those involved, and the responsiveness of the service provider to 'bottom-up' deliberation and communication.Read moreRead less

This Project aims to understand, model and prevent alcohol-related crime, violence and injuries in a high-crime community - Surfers Paradise. It also aims to overcome the traditional barriers to sustaining crime reductions. Information from multiple agencies will be collated in an integrated database. The subsequent modelled estimates will generate user-friendly crime profiles for the community to analyse environmental and situational factors precipitating violence, crime and injury in their area. The Project is innovative because it integrates multiple sources of information, analyses them and enables prevention programmes to be matched to the social, temporal and spatial idiosyncrasies of any high-crime community.Read moreRead less

This project will provide important new knowledge and propose changes to policy, practice and legislation that will promote older people's independence and choice in how their financial affairs are managed. The physical and cognitive frailty of aged care facility residents is increasing and their capacity to manage their assets and income is often limited. This study will address financial elder abuse and problems with how decisions are made on behalf of older people. Improving the legislative, policy and practice frameworks that govern the risks, rights and responsibilities of care staff and family members will assist them to appropriately support and protect older people in residential care.Read moreRead less

The ARC Research Network on Ageing Well will support interdisciplinary, high quality research in the National Research Priority Goal of Ageing Well, Ageing Productively. It will build scale and focus on Australia's notable research strengths in ageing, promote collaborative research, and extend research capacities. The Network will link outstanding researchers from many disciplines, nurture developing researchers, relate social to health researchers, strengthen international collaboration, and involve and inform end-point users. It will foster research which responds to the aspirations and needs of older Australians and informs action that can improve experiences of individual and population ageing.Read moreRead less
