Discovery Projects - Grant ID: DP120102575

    Funder
    Australian Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $270,000.00
    Summary
Energy efficient sensing, computing and communication. This research will study trade-offs in resource use: bandwidth, power, and computational capacity of systems of sensors such as cameras, radars, and distributed sensor networks based on a statistical mechanical theory of information processing, leading to practical algorithms to optimize resource use in the design of such systems.

    Funding Amount
    $275,000.00
    Summary
Modelling and estimation methods for discrete multi-dimensional systems. Multi-dimensional signal processing plays a role in a variety of application areas, ranging from remote sensing for environmental monitoring and geological mapping, to medical imaging and the automatic control of industrial processes. The success of the project will provide mathematical tools for the advancement of the state-of-the-art in these broad areas.

Renewable control of complex systems, signal processing, telecommunication and in general any industries interested in these applications stand to benefit from our research. In particular, the automotive and defence industries stand to benefit from the nonlinear control design aspect of the proposed project outcomes. The telecommunications industries, on the other hand, benefit from the signal processing and communications aspects. We also build a core expertise in optimisation and its applications in Australia by training PhD students and Postdoctoral researchers. The research collaborations will cement and maintain the international linkages which will improve applied research in Australia

Neural Activity Shaping for Retinal and Cochlear Implants. This project aims to develop methods to control and optimise the spatial patterns of neural activity evoked by neural prostheses in order to improve the resolution of neuroprostheses. A major problem for neural prostheses is that the electrical current used to stimulate neurons causes a diffuse spread of activity in the neural tissue, which limits the resolution of the device. For patients this translates into limitations in sound quality, in the case of cochlea implants, or visual acuity, for retinal implants. The outcome of the project will be algorithms that optimally choose the currents on each electrode so as to shape neural activity at the finer resolution of electrode spacing rather than the coarser resolution of current spread.

Discovery Projects - Grant ID: DP130104028

    Funder
    Australian Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $315,000.00
    Summary
Certified evaluation of uncertainty in models of dynamical systems. The purpose of this project is to develop methods which will aid engineers to better analyse the accuracy of models created using experimental data. To support the use of the methods, a toolbox with software implementations will also be developed.

Discovery Early Career Researcher Award - Grant ID: DE120102601

    Funder
    Australian Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $375,000.00
    Summary
Distribution-free system identification: building models from experimental data under minimal statistical assumptions. In fields with strict safety or quality requirements, such as production control, communication and navigation, there is a great need for methods that can build models with guaranteed performance. However, there is a lack of efficient solutions that can work under minimal assumptions on the disturbances; the project aims at developing such methods.
