Miniaturisation-compatible stationary phases and detection techniques will be developed for microseparation techniques of capillary electrochromatography and chip-based separation systems, and their analytical applications will be investigated. Replaceable stationary phases (RSP) of chromatographic particles suspended in reversible gels will be created by delivering a liquid RSP to the column followed by in situ immobilisation. This approach offers flexibility in optimising a number of parameters of the column and of its use for sample pre-treatment and preconcentration. Pulsed potentiometric detection will be developed for the abovementioned microseparation techniques, combining the advantages of pulsed amperometric techniques with the more universally responding potentiometric detection.Read moreRead less

Inflammation is a major contributing factor in many diseases, including arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, cardiovascular disease and cancer. It has recently been shown that the resolution of inflammation is an active biological process initiated by lipid mediators. The aim of this project is to synthesise and characterise pro-resolution lipid mediators, elucidate the enzyme cascades involved in their biosynthesis and explore their roles in the active resolution of inflammation. This project will provide a fundamental understanding of pro-resolution and anti-inflammatory pathways as well as new therapeutic target molecules for the treatment of inflammatory diseases.Read moreRead less
Rapid method development in pharmaceutical analysis using quality-by-design principles. Chemical analysis using separation methods underpins all stages of drug design and analysis. This project will generate new approaches to greatly reduce the time taken to develop a new method of analysis. This will be achieved through development of new computerised techniques for rapid screening, selection and optimisation of analytical methods.

This project aims to pioneer a novel, high-performing class of nano-patterned core-shell particles as chromatographic materials. It will use advanced polymerization and particle preparation techniques in combination with degradable nanoparticles design, to enable the plug-and-play assembly of chromatographic columns. Size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) is one of the most important analytical techniques for polymer chemistry. The expected outcomes of this project are faster measurement times and the possibility of imaging molecular weight distributions at a new level of detail. This project could place Australia at the cutting edge of size-exclusion chromatography phase design in partnership with a leading manufacturer of stationary phases.Read moreRead less

The strong and growing worldwide demand for a range of lobster products cannot be fulfilled by existing wild fisheries. Only the sustainable production of lobsters using hatchery seedstock will satisfy the needs of aquaculture and the possibility of enhancing and reseeding the fishery. Lobster aquaculture will provide a new high-value industry for coastal rural Australia, especially in areas with existing fishing and aquaculture enterprises. This project will develop new technologies to address the challenging target of producing commercial quantities of juvenile lobsters for aquaculture and enhancement.Read moreRead less

A new approach is proposed for the design and synthesis of functionalised ion-exchange stationary phases for analytical nano-separation methods. Desired charged functional groups are first affixed chemically onto nanometre sized latex particles and these particles are then self-assembled mechanically as monoloayer coatings onto a suitable supporting template such as fused silica, monolithic silica or polymer beds, microfibres or microtubes, and channels in microchips. The resultant coated surface then acts as a highly efficient ion-exchange stationary phase which will be used in a wide range of separation technologies including ion chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, capillary electrochromatography and solid-phase microextraction.Read moreRead less
Understanding wastewater treatment technologies for alternative water use: transformation of inorganic and organic nitrogen. This project will identify sustainable treatment processes for nitrogen and pathogen removal in rural wastewater treatment systems. The outcomes will provide water utilities and regulators with practical recommendations for minimising chemical and microbial risks of alternative uses of treated wastewater, and improve rural long-term water security.
Resolving dissolved organic matter: new multi-dimensional separation approaches. To fully understand and model global carbon cycles the source, nature and fate of oceanic dissolved organic carbon is an essential element. This project will develop, model and apply new orthogonol and complementary separation science based technologies to further the comprehensive characterisation and understanding of these complex systems.
