The Airport Metropolis: Managing the Interfaces. The project aims to develop coordinated and equitable decision-making to ensure that airport-urban development balances economic, social and environmental issues and produces a sustainable regional (and national) competitive advantage that is both secure and resilient. The project will develop modelling technologies for the innovative management of data to ensure efficient and resilient infrastructure coordination. The outputs will enable an open planning process whereby all stakeholders are able to provide informed input into decision-making. Strategic decision-making, based on increased certainty about future airport and regional planning and development will improve conditions for growth in a range of industries.

This collaborative research with Queensland Main Roads aims to develop and apply novel statistical modelling techniques which improve on the current statistical methods used for transport modelling. The research outcomes will provide a high level of accuracy in terms of predictions for trips leading to better use of expensive survey data. Predictions will be incorporated into transport models. Such model will be used for improving decisions involving multi billion dollar transport infrastructure investment and applied to South East Queensland. The methods can be extended to transport models for other large conurbations in Australia. Outcomes include improved transport systems with economic benefits for business and the community.

IMPACTS OF TRANSIT LED DEVELOPMENT IN A NEW RAIL CORRIDOR. Impacts of transit-oriented development (TOD) in precincts adjoining the new Perth-Mandurah railway will be addressed by longitudinal survey. Results of a revealed preference questionnaire about actual trips will be combined with a stated choice questionnaire. Aims are to quantify the effects of TOD on rail and car use and on daily activities, new railway services on the travel behaviour of households near new station precincts, differing accessibility of station precincts on household travel patterns, improved accessibility on economic activity and employment. Replacement of car-trips by walking and cycling, changes in shopping & leisure activities & the effect of trip-chaining on number of trips are of particular interest.
