Venous leg ulcers (VLU) are an extremely common, debilitating, costly problem and the burden is expected to rise with the ageing population, obesity and diabetes. Standard best practice treatment includes compression bandaging of the lower leg by tight bandaging. Application of 3 layer (3L) tubular bandage appears to be a promising new treatment according to a pilot study. Summary
Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) is the leading cause of disability in adults in Australia. After ABI, many people are unable to use their upper limb (UL) to perform important, everyday tasks. While there is research evidence which has shown that movement therapy targeted at the UL will improve the likelihood of being able to use the UL after rehabilitation, many therapists do not currently provide sufficient UL movement therapy to patients. This practice gap will be addressed in this project.
Harnessing non-invasive brain stimulation to improve language function in healthy and pathological ageing. This project will examine how the ability of the ageing brain to process language can be improved by non-invasive brain stimulation. The findings have the potential to reveal new ways to treat language impairments in ageing-associated brain injury and disease.

The devastating loss of movement in the hand after stroke could potentially be addressed, but we currently lack of research investigating treatment interventions. This randomised controlled trial will compare the routine interventions of botulinum toxin to botulinum toxin plus best-practice therapy for both cost and clinical outcome. Findings from this trial will provide the necessary information to make decisions about what will improve spasticity and function in the hand and arm after stroke.

Summary
People with the communication disability of aphasia following stroke are critical of rehabilitation services. This project seeks to determine what it takes to live successfully with aphasia so that aphasia rehabilitation can be improved. Participants will be interviewed over the first 12 months following the stroke. The most important factors contributing to success will be identified and barriers and facilitators described. The most important factors can then be targeted in rehabilitation.

I am an occupational therapist investigating the contribution of motivation on activity and participation outcomes with children with congenital hemiplegia. This study will compare an intensive block of group based upper limb rehabilitation delivered in such a way as to enhance self-determination with an individualised distributed model of standard care. My research aims to help improve rehabilitation programs for children with hemiplegia, and facilitate effective allocation of resources.

Summary
For people with chronic lung disease, breathlessness is common, distressing and difficult to relieve. Pulmonary rehabilitation programs have been demonstrated to improve exercise capacity and quality of life. This study will determine whether changing the way people think about the sensation of breathlessness while completing pulmonary rehabilitation, further reduces distress/anxiety and health service use and improve exercise capacity, disability related to breathlessness and quality of life.
Speech production in language-impaired speakers: Informing theoretical models and clinical practice regarding grammatical processing. This research examines how language is stored and processed in our minds and the ways this can go wrong. By improving our theory of language processing, the research will result in improved diagnosis and treatment for the ten per cent of Australians who suffer from communication impairment.
