In particular, this work will study the problem of supporting multimedia traffic sources such as audio, video and data using the variable rate transmission techniques to maximise traffic capacity of a wireless network. The project will also develop a comprehensive discrete event simulation model of a WCDMA based wireless network to study the performance of the network using different advanced traffic sources.Read moreRead less
Assisted GPS and Advanced Positioning For Emergency Services. Many volunteers have lost their lives fighting bushfires in Australia. Fires are becoming more numerous and more fierce. Some of those firemen could have been saved if better information was available: where they were, where the firefront was and how it was progressing. This project aims to save lives by solving part of this problem: locating and reporting the position of the remote firefighter by making GPS work reliably under trees. ....Assisted GPS and Advanced Positioning For Emergency Services. This will also make search and rescue operations safer and more efficient. The technology can transfer readily into the location-based services market which is set to boom in the next decade. This project helps maintain momentum in Australia's world-class but small positioning industry.Read moreRead less

VHF wireless technologies for last-mile Internet access in regional Australia. One of Australia's most vexing social issues is the provision of the last-mile Internet connection in regional Australia. The BushLAN team will solve this problem at minimal cost by developing a cellular wireless local area network operating on the TV band I channels (45-70 MHz). We will do this by developing a wireless modem whose design takes into account the properties of radio propagation in the Australian enviro ....VHF wireless technologies for last-mile Internet access in regional Australia. One of Australia's most vexing social issues is the provision of the last-mile Internet connection in regional Australia. The BushLAN team will solve this problem at minimal cost by developing a cellular wireless local area network operating on the TV band I channels (45-70 MHz). We will do this by developing a wireless modem whose design takes into account the properties of radio propagation in the Australian environment. We are collaborating with Internet service providers in regional Australia to trial systems currently being developed. In the process we will develop a new technology that will provide training for young engineers.Read moreRead less
New Approaches for Wireless Implantable Biomedical Devices. Wireless biomedical implants of the future will interface with biological systems to perform physiological tasks such as vision restoration, reanimation of paralyzed limbs, and chemical sensing. Wireless biomedical implants of the future will interface with biological systems to perform physiological tasks such as vision restoration, reanimation of paralyzed limbs, and chemical sensing. The potential benefit to society will come not only from alleviating human suffering and improving quality of life, but also by reducing the health care costs now directed to assist people with disabilities such as blindness, stroke and spinal-cord injury survivors. Using similar technologies, cochlear implants have already restored functional hearing to over 100,000 deaf patients around the world. The outcomes of the project can also be applied to a variety of other applications such environmental monitoring, security and identification systems. Read moreRead less
Electromagnetic field strength simulator (ELMO) for RF hazard assessment. There is significant community fear related to exposure to mobile telephone radiation. The computer program ELMO will be designed to accept information about all RF transmitters in the vicinity of cellular telephone towers from an existing database, and to calculate the total field strength. This will allow hazard assessment for both RF technicians working on the tower and adjacent residents.
Locating Interference to GPS: Protecting the World's Aircraft Landing Systems. GRAS is an enormous initiative that is expected to generate billions of dollars in exports for Australia. The equipment developed in this project will protect the system from radio frequency interference. It thus protects these exports, and creates a new exportable product. By protecting this system, it makes air travel safer both in Australia and in the countries that buy this Australian technology.

Wireless communications, due to its low initial deployment cost, high scalability and flexibility, will play a key role in providing broadband communications to sparsely populated areas of Australia. To this end, the Australian government announced "Connect Australia" aiming for nationwide broadband communication services, in which wireless communications is an important component. This project focuses on improving the throughput of wireless communications, especially for rural areas, through the use of a new technology: semi-contention based multi-user diversity. The outcome of this project will help to connect Australian people and to lift the international profile of Australian engineering science in wireless communications.Read moreRead less

This project will investigate inexpensive radio-frequency transponders on banknotes that enjoy all of the advantages of, and, indeed, operate in a manner somewhat similar to barcodes. Transponders of this type may potentially replace barcode technology, thereby allowing automated identification of individual banknotes at multiple points in transaction chains. The resulting efficiencies in banknote authentication and other applications will generate a significant economic benefit for Australia. Additionally, the development of state-of-the-art transponders based on fundamental microwave- and antenna engineering prospectively gives Australia a cutting-edge advantage as a leading player in the fast-growing RFID market.Read moreRead less
