The project aims to advance significantly the interplay between additive combinatorics, number theory and graph theory. The project will use and advance methods and results of additive combinatorics and give new applications to such fundamental problems on Cayley graphs as connectivity, random walks, colouring and dominating sets. The significance of the project is ensured by its goal of advancing existing results and methods of additive combinatorics and also in finding their new applications that have long-lasting impact on paramount problems for Cayley graphs that underlie the architecture of crucial communication networks. Achieving progress on these problems and developing relevant methods of additive combinatorics will be the main outcomes. Read moreRead less
Hecke Algebras in Algebra and Analysis. The aim of this program is to adapt techniques from harmonic analysis and operator-algebraic representation theory to study Hecke algebras arising in algebraic and geometric settings. The relevant analytic structures are C*-algebras and the fundamental question is then "Which Hecke algebras have a faithful enveloping C*-algebra?" We investigate this question, first by developing an appropriate theory of crossed products by semigroups and, second, by using ....Hecke Algebras in Algebra and Analysis. We investigate this question, first by developing an appropriate theory of crossed products by semigroups and, second, by using the notion of topologization which enables the Hecke algebra to be studied in the context of topological groups.Read moreRead less

Operator algebras are used to study a wide range of physical systems in quantum physics and quantum computing, and in electrical engineering. The clearer our picture of how operator algebras work, the better we are able to predict and explain how these physical systems will behave. The proposed research project is aimed at showing that we can describe operator algebras in terms of simple coloured diagrams rather than abstract mathematical symbols. Consequently, the project will lead to a simpler and less technical approach to the physical problems which operator algebras are used to study.Read moreRead less

Dynamic Equations on Measure Chains. Boundary value problems (BVPs) on ``measure chains''are new and useful mathematical equations that describe the world around. This project aims to answer some imporotant and fundamental mathematical questions such as
(i) Under what conditions do BVPs on measure chains actually have solutions?
(ii) If solutions do exist, then what are their properties?
The approach is to use modern tools from mathematical analysis, including topological transversality ....Dynamic Equations on Measure Chains. This project aims to answer some imporotant and fundamental mathematical questions such as
(i) Under what conditions do BVPs on measure chains actually have solutions?
(ii) If solutions do exist, then what are their properties?
The approach is to use modern tools from mathematical analysis, including topological transversality and Leray-Schauder degree.

It was invented 200 hundred years ago and has grown into a language for analysing and classifying things ranging from wallpaper patterns to crystals, the fundamental particles of physics and Rubik's cube. The chief investigators have made significant breakthroughs in the study of symmetry groups of networks, giving Australia an international lead in this research area. The project will develop the insights gained to make Australia a centre of expertise on these symmetry groups, which have applications to many areas including information and communication technology.Read moreRead less
Modular character sheaves. This project aims to complete the fundamental mathematical theory of modular group representations, the algebraic description of symmetry over finite number systems. This project aims to complete the fundamental mathematical theory of modular group representations, the algebraic description of symmetry over finite number systems. Group representation theory can be applied to any linear problem involving symmetry. However, the modular case, where the characteristic of the underlying field is a prime number, is less understood than real or complex scalars, and this lack of understanding blocks potential applications. This project will use geometric methods to answer questions about modular representations of the finite groups of Lie type, the most important class of finite groups. This project could make modular representation theory essential for computations, enabling faster solutions to problems of linear algebra and allowing future applications in such areas as data transmission technology.Read moreRead less

Climate change can be expected to have complex, long-term consequences for Australia's biodiversity, for our agricultural and marine production systems, and for regional communities. The Southern Ocean is a critical driver of global climate, connecting the three major oceanic basins. Using sophisticated mathematics to analyse state-of-the-art global ocean models, this project will create a detailed picture of hitherto invisible Southern Ocean circulation 'pathways'. The newly discovered pathways will greatly enhance our understanding of the Southern Ocean circulation, lead to improved coupled climate models, and increase our ability to predict future climate change and threats to marine populations.
