We will adapt and test an evidence-based intervention to identify and address domestic violence with newly arrived refugee women, partnering with Settlement Services International, one of Australia’s largest providers of settlement programs. Domestic violence is the lead contributor to premature death among Australian women, and costs $22 b each year, with refugee women at heightened risk. This study will compare outcomes for women who receive the intervention to controls and culturally sensitive, scaleable tested tools. This intervention should reduce the human and financial cost of domestic violence among refugee and other vulnerable migrant women, providing tools to settlement services to address this complex, hidden problem. Mobile phone text reminders to modify behaviours and prevent cardiovascular disease. Strategies are needed to improve adherence to behavioural and medical preventative treatments for heart disease. Brief informative reminders sent via mobile phone text message have potential as a cheap and safe method of improving behavioural change and adherence to treatments in people at risk of cardiovascular disease.

Understanding the potential and actual impact of mass adversity on individual and societal resilience and conceptualisation of the future will help improve the preparedness, response, and recovery by emergency workers, individuals, and society to these events. Guiding likely individual and social behaviours at an appropriate time will help to avoid or mitigate negative social, economic, and health impacts. Studying Bali survivors will lead to an understanding of how their experiences and recoveries have impacted their behaviours and perception of the future, and will identify the most effective professional and community responses to future threat. Early Indicators Of Noise Injury: Are Decreased Auditory Processing Skills Evident In Noise-exposed Adults Prior To Diagnosis Of Hearing Loss?
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$367,605.00
Summary
Recent research indicates that noise-exposed individuals with similar hearing thresholds to non-noise exposed counterparts are more likely to have diminished temporal and spectral auditory processing abilities. This research aims to determine the relationship between noise exposure levels and auditory processing difficulties; the influence of musical training in ameliorating these difficulties; and a neurological model of causation, operation and possible remediation of these difficulties.

This project aims to generate legal, behavioural and attitudinal knowledge on tobacco control – in particular plain packaging – to inform translation of policies from Australia to India and assess the impact of these policies. Tobacco causes 1.2 million deaths per year in India. Yet it is well known what works to reduce these deaths and Australia has been at the forefront of developing such interventions. The project seeks to understand the political, legal and social feasibility of introducing plain packaging in India, then develop, pilot and introduce a surveillance survey to inform policy production and impact monitoring. If evidence supports India to introduce plain packaging, then other regional countries will potentially follow suit.Read moreRead less
Automated pathogen detection using time-gated luminescence microscopy. A rapid and general means of in-situ pathogen identification would benefit the community by ensuring that appropriate treatments can be applied in the early stages of a disease. Patient prognosis is thereby improved and opportunities for multi-drug resistant organisms to arise are limited. Time-gated luminescence microscopy (TgM) exploits persistent luminescence to overcome autofluorescence, a serious problem in pathogen detection. Drug-resistant 'Golden Staph' (MRSA) will be used as the model organism to evaluate TgM efficacy. Ultimately however, TgM will be applied for the detection of tuberculosis, a highly contagious disease affecting the respiratory system of more than one-third of the world's population.Read moreRead less
Increasing physical activity and reducing sedentary behaviour to improve health and wellbeing in adolescent boys from disadvantaged schools. This project will involve the design and evaluation of a school-based program to increase physical activity and reduce sedentary behaviour in adolescent boys from disadvantaged backgrounds. This project has the potential to improve the health behaviours of current and future Australians most at risk for the development of lifestyle diseases.

Recent research indicates that domestic violence is the leading contributor to death, disability and illness in women aged 15-44 in Australia and leads to health costs of $314 m annually (VicHealth 2004, Access Economics 2004). Routine screening is a low cost measure aimed at prevention and early intervention for domestic violence, which has been successfully introduced for women entering antenatal, early childhood, mental health and drug and alcohol services operated by NSW Health. The research will be the first study of its size to consider the outcomes of routine screening for domestic violence in public health settings in the Australian context.Read moreRead less
Molecular and immunological approaches to managing Australia's seafood allergy epidemic. Seafood is an increasingly important cause of food allergy. Novel insight into the functions of why and how proteins from seafood develop to potent allergens will lead to the development of better diagnostics and therapeutics. This will assist patients to better manage their serious food allergy.

This project provides many benefits for the community, exploring the legal and ethical issues around consent for data linkage, convening Citizens' Juries to weigh the evidence and make recommendations. It addresses National Research Priorities: Promoting and Maintaining Good Health and Safeguarding Australia as well as National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy priorities. It uses vaccine safety surveillance as a case study to evaluate the effectiveness of data linkage (through linking Commonwealth immunisation data to state hospital data) and the methodologies and lessons learnt from cross jurisdictional data linkage can be transferred to other areas.
